I just installed Windows XP professional, then I installed "metconnect", a local internet service provider. Since that, every time I turn on my PC, the ICQ window would pop out and the metconnect would log on automatically. How can I stop that? thanks

Check your startup folder and this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

If the startup program is found just delete it.

If you want to backup the Registry "RUN" key simply hightlight it and choose "Export registry file" from the "registry" menu.

thanks for the reply, Ghost_Hacker, sorry if u asked u a stupid question, but where is the start up folder? Is it "start">"programs">"startup"?
Also, I was wondering are there any important patches I need to download fix the security flaw in the XP? thanks

Yes, the startup folder is found in the "programs" folder.

Go here for the lastest security patches for XP.

Also, did you ever let it complete the online activation/registration procedures?

If not it is probably wanting to call MS so you can, and it will use your ISP as opposed to the toll free number if you already have your ISP installed........

thanks for the reply,Ghost_Hacker and mjc.
Ghost_Hacker, I check the startup, it's empty, and I went the internet option, the "never dial a connection" has been check. Yet it still dials for connection whenever I turn on the PC.
mjc, I haven't register it, do I have to do both activation and register it?
thanks

No, but it might want to keep trying to do an online registration....check this (http://members.aol.com/axcel216/xp1.htm#AXPR) out for a couple of suggestions on how to deal with the registration....basically it is not needed (activation is) but......

THIS IS A DOUBLE POST

please in the future try to keep subjects limited to one area, I was helping you on one thread with this, and all my fellow geeks were trying to help you here.

we work better together here!!

edit: sorry I do see that the thread I was answering you in was an old one, and that don't count!

It is always better to start a specific thread rather than "piggyback" off an old one.

so in other words- my mistake http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
