Start Menu Not Found-Win XP

I have installed XP Pro recently. I have fiddled around for 2 days,
On the 3rd day morning when i booted, i found that i am not able to view the desktop icons or use the start button I am able to view the desktop picture only. I am able to run any program from the task manager( run new task) option.I dual boot ME and XP.

I use command prompt all the time in winXP Pro.

had you tried system restore ?

desktop icons...could it be as simple as right click anywhere on the desktop point to Arrange Icons By then put a check next to Show Desktop Icons..
also could you have dragged to taskbar out of sight at the bottom or the side( do you get the double arrow when you move the mouse pointer to the edge?

Goto control panel/taskbar and start menu-make sure you uncheck " autohide ".

Also make sure that you right click the desktop and enable " show desktop icons "

Though why you want to is beyond me. It's nice to finally get rid of those annoyances without having to edit the registry or use a third party program.

In detail: Desktop is disabled, no response to right or left clicks,
Pressing ctrl+esc, windows key doesn't bring up the taskbar.
Sea69, I am saving sys restore as the last but one option.
iisbob, I am unable to run the taskbar/startmenu from the control panel.
All other cpl items are accessible except the taskbar cpl, when i click on the shortcut nothing happens.

Have you tried going into safe-mode to see if you can access from there? If you can follow the instuctions previously posted

Booting in safe mode also had the same problem.
Since,reinstalled xp and doing fine for the past one week.
