Go here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q288165

and download the post SP2 patch at the bottom of the article. The patch will give you an updated NTVDM.EXE.

If this doesn't help, post back with more details on what program you where using when the error happened. Was it IE? If so what version?

Good Luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Still doing it. Although certainly less often. I'm not greatly concerned. I do have pc-cillan running as well. I'm inclined to go to IE6 but since I went from 5.0 to 5.5 and it still does it I'm thinking it wont make a lot of difference.

dodgechrist,

Have you checked on available RAM once you're up and running? Seems like a boatload of programs running in your TASK menu. What make of RAM are you running?

Is this an IBUILTIT system? Have you been having these problems right along? If an IBUILTIT which slots to you have devices plugged into?

Whyzman, Thanks, Yes you are right. I did build it. And its my first. Just before I checkd the board here, I crashed again. Had Flash5 and IE5.5 open.
How/where do I ck avail ram once I'm running? I don't knw the ram i'm running, bought from PCHeiden.com - 168 pin SDRAM modules, 3.3 volt, unbuffered, non-ECC.
Something else I just noticed. After I log in and before my desktop comes up I get a message, "Failure to open registry handle" Thats all it says not which registry handle. Below is my latest error dump.
As far as what is plugged in where I'm not sure.
Both HD and cdrom are on separate channels. Beyond that I will have to look.

There are a couple of issues to address regarding the ASUS A7V133. If your video card is AGP you will want to leave PCI slot 1 open. Are you using the Promise Controller for your Hard Drive? If so, you will want to leave PCI slot 2 also open.

ASUS boards are notorious for requiring high quality RAM...I am not sure about the RAM you are using. Most often folks here recommend Crucial...especially with ASUS boards.

What BIOS version are you using?

Do you have the latest 4in1 VIA drivers?

Has your system ever worked properly?

I am not all that familiar with Win2K for finding System Information. You might try Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information. Once there check on Physical Memory and what Physical Memory is available. I'm still concerned about what appears to be a pretty large number of programs running in the background.

Do you have all the proper Win2K drivers for all your devices?

The error your getting Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)
normally points to a software problem. The number of background programs isn't that much of a problem in a "NT" system as it would be in a 9X system. "NT" systems run alot more in the background then does 9X. But you may still want to make sure you have plenty of memory to run your programs.
To check your systems memory open "control panel" and click the "system" icon. Ram is displayed on the first page.

My best advice would be to reinstall service pack 2. If that doesn't work then you'll need to look at what programs start at system startup. Are any of them failing to load? Does this error only happen when running IE? or when running an IE plug in? If so install the lastest service pack for IE or upgrade to IE6.

Another thing you'll want to check is did you start getting these error after upgrading to service pack 2? If so, and you choose the option to "save" files, you can uninstall service pack 2.

If you get this error when running programs other than IE, then you may have the ASUS "memory" problem Whyman refers to. But before you run out and buy more memory. I would reinstall Win2k. Check that everthing works and then slowly reinstall your service packs and applications, checking that each one does not cause problems before installing the next.

Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

does this nefarious mem wank! look like this? (Red circle, white x)The instruction at "0x77f83a65" referenced memory at "0x000000000". The memory could not be written". Click on OK to terminate the program" ??
I'm occaisionally getting them while running apps or I'll get a quick bluescreen and the machine will restart.
Removed and reinstall SP2 as well as removing preSP3 quoick fix for Ntvdm.exe
I think I will hv my mem checked. OH! and a big OH my! PC-cillan keeps telling me I've a boot virus on my drives.*cowering* that isn't what is doing this is it?
Thanks everyone for your continued interest and putting up with this irritant.

Not sure if the virus is the actual cause, but it can't be helping any...see if there is a removal tool offered for it, or you may be doing GH's suggested reinstall any way.........
