I want to connect to the internet via another computer on my home network.
Computer 1 is a pentium 166MMX running Win98 and has internet access via an internal modem.
Computer 2 is a Pentium 4 running dual boot W2K Pro & XP Pro. I am using W2K.
Both computers are linked via TC/ICP 100 baseTX through a switch.
I have configured both computers to the same workgroup name and have entered IP address for both.
Can someone please give me a step by step how to connect machine 2 to the internet?
How can I configure IE 5 Browser to dial up the ISP via my LAN? I am not sure how to set up the connection/proxy and Port settings.
Currently when I launch the browser from machine 2 the IP address shows "connecting to site of machine 1" briefly in the bottom the browser, then the page cannot find the server.
How can I get access to my ISP from machine 2?

Hello,
Ive never done ICS with a dial up connection, however this site HERE (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/) was very helpfull to me. They have walk throughs for versions of windows.
If the windows98 machine is the host, you must be running WIN98 second edition, and have installed Internet connection sharing, from the windows cd.

Suggest you use the win2k as the main connection to the internet, the second being the 98 system. You need to set up Internet connection sharing which you will find in dial up connections (the last tab)by ticking the enable. Win2k will set an IP for you win98 system, you should not need to set an IP as it will automatically set it each time it connects. On you second system you need to enable connection by LAN (in internet properties). If you have a firewall you will also need to allow this to allow your second pc to connect. The help in win2k is very good and would suggest you use that if you get stuck.

Thanks for your advice but a couple of things I would like to get clear.
1.
Why do you suggest running the machine with the modem to be on W2K rather that 98? Does it not work both ways?
2.
If I don't set an IP address in machine 1 then how do I connect to this machine from No.2 when wanting to access files? Surely both machines must have IP Adresses and both be in the same Workkgroup to be able to share files?

The reason I suggested running the modem on the win2k machine is the ICS in win2k is good!! It works!!! Anyway why would you want to use the older machine for internet access?
Win2k will set your IP with out you having to do it so in your TCP/IP setting on your win98 machine you dont need to specify an IP just set it as "Obtain IP address automatically".
Set the ICS as already suggested and you should be away.

Hi ffisher2,
ICS can be pretty simple if you follow the directions. HERE (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics) is a good link to help you out. The only trouble I see is you have win98 and not 98se. ICS might not be all that functional in win98.
Hope it helps. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Dead right, forgot that win98 not SE is not compatible with ICS or should I say doesnt have it!!! You count always use a proxy server such as analog X..
I have used the AnalogX proxy application on a Win98 1st edition computer and I was VERY easy. Just make sure that you set all of the proxy settings according to the ports they specify in the readme file. For example, HTTP traffic should go over some port like 5688 or something like that, the real port is specified in the readme. But, I had very little trouble getting programs to use the proxy with the exception of any program needing UDP(?) ports. ie. Quake3.

The first time I installed Windows it took only one try. When I tried re-installing Windows at a later date it took 30+ tries before I got it right... go figure. =P
