Mandrake 8.2
Asus A7V MB
ATI All In Wonder 128 Pro (32MB)4X AGP Video Card
Creative DXR3 Decoder board
Samsung Syncmaster 950P Monitor
SBLive MP3+ Soundcard
Maxtor 40gb Ata 100 hard drive
At the end of installation when trying to configure X whether I select 4.2.0 with or without acceleration and select "test" > I get a quick "no such module" (??) message and the screen goes into standby.Have to reboot at that point. Tried to use 3.3.6 but get some error message regarding lib files. Have gone into the XF86Configuration file via MC and and entered the info for the monitor and the video card. After saving this file is there a command I should run like I do after editing the Liloconfig file? After rebooting and typing "startx" I get "invalid hostname" error message. If I type startkde I get messages "cannot open display" server and no such file messages. Wish I could be more specific but it's been a long day. This card works fine in Windows and have it running in BeOS. I have Mandrake installed on an old machine with a 4mb Matrox card -- had no problems there.I'd like to get this working so I can dive back into Linux again.Thank's- Dave
How did you get the Mandrake disk?
If you downloaded it then you have a corrupt iso, if it was a purchased disk look for scratches.....I was having the same problem when I first installed 8.1, it turned out to be a corrupt iso. I had to grab the first disk again (and dial-up you can imagine what I did that weekend........).

Downloaded the three discs from the links provided on the Mandrake site. Have a broadband connection > still took a looong time.Weird though I was able to download all four FreeBSD discs in 90 minutes > the 3 Linux discs took a lot longer.

lspcidrake shows the following: Card:ATI Rage 128:ATI|Rage 128 Pro AGP 4X. This is correct info for my card > so why can't XConfiguration set this up?
After manual editing of the XConfig file > typing startx brings up the following error messages:
hostname: unknown host
execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno2) giving up
xinit: no such file or directory (errno2): Aunable to connect to x server
xinit:no such process (errno3): server error
I have no idea what these messages mean- hoping this will give someone out there enough info to see where I'm making a mistake- thank's.
Basically what happened to me was that one of the lib files got corrupted during the download...so I grabbed it again. and it installed no problem the second time around. I was getting the exact same errors and could do the exact same things in text mode, but could not configure X at all. It even recognised my video card. As to why it took so long....slow server, try grabbing it from here (http://www.linuxiso.org/mandrake.html).
Also run the checksum program to verify that the iso is intact......

For the hell of it I decided to try and install Mandrake 8.2 on my other puter with a Soyo K7V Dragon Plus motherboard,an ATI All In Wonder Radeon 32mb AGP card and a SBlaster Audigy soundcard.During install it didn't detect the sound card but when I rebooted I noticed it loaded the Audigy driver. When it came time to configure X > I selected 4.2 with acceleration > test > gave the same error message again but after that the test screen showed up > I selected yes/ok? > then I got an "out of sync range" floating across the screen > rebooted > it booted into GUI just fine. Will edit the monitor info when I back into it again. STILL determined to get Linux installed on my Asus machine with the All In Wonder 128 Pro 32mb AGP card.I will have to try again becauseI had to wipe out the installation and have to start over again. When I get organized I will compare the config files between the two machines. I would like to have posted the XF86Config file but I could only get to the info from Midnight Commander > clueless as to being able to save it to a floppy so I could post it from Windows. Thank's for your help- Tuzinor

You need to download the ISO again or buy the program...mjc has already (I would bet my life) correctly diagnosed the problem: corrupted files.
This is why you get the same error on another totally different computer...you can try and use those disks all day long and it's not going to change anything.
Einstein summed this up when he said: "Doing things the same way you always have and expecting the results to be different is insanity."
