Hi, again. What is the difference between Windows XP OEM and the retail versions? (Specifically Home Edition)

If you have the OEM version you Must call the system Manufacturer for tech support.
If you buy and Install the retail version You call Microsoft for tech support.


The OEM version is Normally the version included with new systems.

As far as the product itself, they should be identical. Talking about an operating system, OEM just means that it was licensed to be sold with a new computer. Of course, a part of that license may be slight modifications. Maybe additional drivers for the equipment being sold with it. But I doubt M$ is going to let Dell, Compaq, or whoever to strip down or modify their flagship product.

OEM hardware is a whole different story. Could be identical. Could be severely crippled even though it uses the same technology. Word to the wise: make sure you know exactly what you're getting before you buy a OEM motherboard.
