I've got a feeling I'm going to be asking a lot of questions over the next few weeks - and many of them will show my profound ignorance of the world outside of Windows. But I'm learning, right? So...
I've downloaded both j2re-1_4_0-linux-i386-rpm.bin and j2re-1_4_0-linux-i386.bin from the java site and am trying to install either on Mandrake 8.2. The installation tips (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/jre/install-linux.html) are written for installation from a command prompt. Double clicking in the GUI opens the files in a text editor. Neither the software manager nor the archiver recognizes the files. My attempts to do anything from command prompts are confusing and frustrating me. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
Help, please?

Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.
If you want to install java so all user accounts have access to it.
then you should log on as Root or Super / administrator user account.
The If you are using the GUI desktop for example KDE
You need to open a terminal program. From the KDE button go up to Terminal then select the Terminal(super user )
Then follow the directions from your link for installing the program.
And use the folder for all user access listed in the direction (/usr/local ,, if I recall correctly )
as the install folder.
When you are finished type EXIT to close the terminal window

OK, thanks, I'll try that when I get home.
I found this (http://personal.atl.bellsouth.net/atl/p/s/psadler/KnowledgeWorks.htm), and I'm starting to grasp some basic concepts, especially about the file structure, that I wasn't aware of before.
Anyone got some good tutorial bookmarks for command prompt and/or Gnome/KDE tutorials?
"This is how you perform this task, and this why you perform it that way. Which logically introduces how to perform this task, and why it's performed that way. Which takes us to..."
When I'm starting out learning something technical, and I really wish I could find a comprehensive guide written like that, I just know that some day I'll save newbies the agony I went through by writing that guide. Of course, the more layers you pull back, the more you discover. And then there's the hard work of compiling all that you've learned and trying to make it structured...
I guess this would be a good time to say "Thanks, ixl, for all that you've done!" http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

"Running Linux" from O'Reilly is great. I use it constantly for finding answers to questions, and just plain learning new stuff.
Are you trying to get your browsers to run Java applets? I've pretty much mastered that if you need help. All I did was right click the icon for the zipped file and selected "unzip here" from the menu. You might have to do this as root and you may also have to add zip to your path.
linuxnewbie.org (http://www.linuxnewbie.org) is my favorite online resource for linux help.

Linux- Because you wouldn't buy a car with the hood welded shut, why should your O.S. be different?
