Hi All,
I've just got back from a mates house, She's having problems with Win 98.

1: Where ever she goes all her details are stored, If she types her home address telephone number postal code passwords. They automatically show up on screen, How do I disable this.

2: When browsing on line sometimes out of the blue she gets thrown back to her home page.

3: She has never upgraded Win 98 since she bought the machine, is that ok.
If she does upgrade will it replace IE5 with IE6 which we don't want to do.

I've scanned the system with Adaware, Avg, Nav, all clear.

Thanks,
kfh.

To get rid ot the info (which is stored locally in one of the crazy alpha-numeric files in her profile) go to Internet Options-> Content -> Autocomplete and turn it off.......and then clear forms and clear passwords, but then she will have to enter a password for every site that she has a password for, or alternately just clear the forms.

What do you mean? Never got any ot the security/bugfixes for 98?

Getting those will not automatically require you to upgrade to IE6 (yet), but just make sure that you only get those that specific to her system or any patches for specific problems.

The home page thing,,,not sure about that unless it is a cache problem or she is accidentally hitting the home button instead to the back button (you may want to ry rearranging the buttons. Right click on a blank spot on the toolbar and the select customize...the highlight the desired button and click move up or doan as desired.

I assume you already have the Windows Update thing for 98, but if not, you can go MS 98 page (http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/default.asp), and either download it or order it. I just ordered two more copies of that..was $10.50 for the two..said "shipping costs". Doesn't change the browser at all..just fixes the 98 bugs. I am still using IE 5 too.

Correct terminology is "Customer Service Pack" for 98. Except for bells and whistles, it is/was the part that takes 98 to 98se. Bug fixes and increased USB support. I recommend ordering it on the CD if one plans to continue using 98. Sooner or later will no longer be available..like so many other things that have gone the way of the dinosaur. We already had one, but I ordered the other two for friends using 98 that don't have Internet access.

Thanks,
kfh.

Hi kfh
If you are a masocist go the ME way. BUT! if you have any sanity do not think about ME. She will have nothing but trouble (my limited experience with it is on a couple of friends computers that I am continually asked to fix - Or maybe that's the problem! They ask ME to look at thier computers http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)
You can download the service pack for nothing. Just make sure you store it somewhere safe as all support for 98 finishes shortly. If you go to the following site you will be able to download, and keep sepeprately, all the patches released since the service pack was relelased. (this is the corprate site link - does not install at at time of download as the normal update site does) http://corporate.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
