Hi,

I just ran F disk on an AcerPower 4100 and installed Win 98 SE version 98 4.10.2222 A.

I am having trouble installing an Intel MD5628D-L-A PCI modem. The modem is installed on Com 4 but the computer does not recognize it and keeps trying to reinstall to Com 2.

When I go to Control Panel/ Modem/ Intel Ham Data Fax Voice/ Properties/ General/ the place where the Port should be listed there is a black box with a drop down box that has Com 1 and Com 2. (This is the place Windows Help tells me I should go to change the modem port)

How do I get the computer to recognize Com 4?

Another question: When you have a computer like the Acer 4100 or a computer like a Compaq that has its own programs added onto a Operating system is it possible to Fdisk the hard drive and install Windows 98 SE without all the programs that the computer manufacture added?

Any assistance appreciated.

Daniel

Hello Daniel and welcome,
I have run into this before. My solution is to be sure and do a cold boot after install. Install the modem again and do a cold boot again. This time it should install the second one on Com4, then you uninstall the one on com2. No guaranties but it has worked for me.

As for installing a non-manufacturers disk OS, yes it can be done. The real problem there is, you may have to really dig to find the correct drivers for some components.
Usualy not to much of an issue though.

Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif
