Hope someone can help me. I am running out of memory on my C drive

In "My Computer" is states the following:

C: Used 1.49 GB Free 509MB Capacity 1.99GB
D: Used 1.20 GB Free 2.79 BG Capacity 3.99GB

What the heck is D drive?? and why does it have more capacity?

How can I move or delete d:drive and put it all in c:drive?

Also when trying to burn a cd to my burner I get a message "cache
is empty" Not sure if the two are the same problem.

The two items are unrelated. Your Hard Drive(s) are referred to as Drive Space or Hard Disk Space......not to be confused with Random Access Memory (RAM)...which is always called "memory". You have either one Hard Drive which (for some reason) was partitioned into two partitions (2 gig is C and 4 gig is D....OR you have two physical hard drives in your computer...we cant tell without more information (like the screen you get at boot up...it tells you how many hard drives it finds). If you only have one hard drive then the way to get all of your data into one partition ie drive C is to either: 1. Buy a program like "Partition Magic" which allows you to manipulate partitions or 2. Start over by repartitioning your drive and re-formatting it and reinstalling EVERYthing! Otherwise, you will have to live with it and begin installing all new programs in the "D" drive...you need to leave about 100 MB of free space in Drive "C" for windows to work right (assuming you have WIn).

The message "Cache is empty" is not one I am familiar with....did you look up "error messages" in your CD burner software??

Thks Randy for your reply. I only have one hard drive. I am glad I
asked this question before I did anything, I was going to delete the
logical dos drives and extended dos drive on d: drive. As far as my
empty cache problem I get a runtime error with it, and I am waiting
for a reply from the company about it.

Thks again

Your hard drive is likely using the FAT16 file system. With the FAT16 file system, the 2G partition limitation is built into the operating system. Windows 95 OSR2 and Windows 98 are capable of using the FAT32 system, which will get rid of this problem. The existing partitions would need to be deleted and a new partition created with fdisk.

Since it is preferred to cache the data to a hard drive before writing to the CD, and the remaining space on your C: partition is less than the maximum capacity of a CD, one thing you might try is to shift virtual memory to the D: partition, which would free up space on the C: drive.

To change your virtual memory drive, click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and double-click the System icon. Select the Performance tab and then click the Virtual Memory button. Check the "Let Me Specify My Own Virtual Memory Settings" option and select the desired drive from the Hard Disk pull-down menu. When you finish, click OK.

Reid: Double check your first post and reread the original.

C=1.99GB
D=3.99GB

That rules out FAT16, it couldn't use the 4GB partition...unless the two are using different FAT??? unlikely....

Just thought you might want to know about the mistake...a rare occurrence...

I think Randy is on the right track with the cache issue, 509MB is not enough to cache an entire CD, moving the swap file to D drive might be a good thing...and make sure you always keep over 750MB free on D drive if you do that. You'll need about 750MB for a CD plus enough for a decent size swap file, so I'd say about 900MB.
