I run an Athlon 500 with Micro Star Award ATX iR1 Mainboard A socket built about August 1999. It started with 3 RAM slots and 1 x 128MB DIMM. In March 2000 I successfully installed 1 extra DIMM giving 256MB Ram (It's 100 MHz RAM ).
This year I upgraded again with another 1 x 128 in the third slot. ALl system and RAM tests work. BUT I get Windows crashes using IE or OE - usually V cache ones. Checking Windows 98SE SYtsem Tools, System Information Windows test shows missing Dlls etc. If I remove the third DIMM it all works without reloading Windows! And Windows is OK.

DIMM returned to supplier (Evesham Computer) tested OK but replaced with new. Still same problem.

Usual tests and installation checks out OK , new RAM tests ok, Windows tests OK until I run IE or OE. I'm using a ISDN card (PCI) Matrox Millenium G400 with old or upgraded drivers (no change to failures) and a USB printer.
System Monitor and resources show only 60% system loads.

Any help appreciated.
New Bios perhaps?

Does this chip work in the motherboard by itself with no problems?

Remove your 2 good chips and place the 1 that you just bought boot
and see if you have the same problem.

You stated the 2 128's you have were pc 100 is the other the same? Is the chip exactly the same as the other 2. IE 2 pc100 SDram Cas2 chips combined with 1 pc100 cas3 chip.

Some motherboards may not like different ram in the machine.

Have you tried shuffling the RAM sticks around. Some MOBO will work with the RAM in any order others like the big one either first or last. Also from the MOBO manual does it say that the board supports 512MB.

If you notice the big one was last in previous config so it may need to be last again.

Unless you have an enormous CAD program......I rather doubt there is more than 5% improvement from 256 MB ram to 384 MB anyway http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
