After formatting and reinstalling win 98 second edition I have had problems. Most of this is with hardware conflicts and I think the culprit is the CD ROM.
Heres whats happening I install windows 98 se and once they go to the last restart button and finishing off installing a few more things my CD Rom doesn`t work so I presume when it is setting up the hardware is when the CD Rom disappears. Therefore I can`t get the 98 windows all installed correctly. So am having lots of problems. I did however install it with a disk but it is not shown in device column as being on the computer. I go into devices and their is a yellow exclamation mark under floppy disk and primary IDE controller (dualfifo).Their are no conflicts when I check properties of these.
Also when I go to my computer and check properties with right sided mouse under performance of course it says that some things are running in MSCOs and could cause problems with running of the computer.
In the list of things it says drive A: Drive C is using MSDOS compatibility mode file system. The first thing reads compatability reduces overall system performances. It also says under details that is is something in the configuration file that should be changed. I presume it is the CDROM as thats the only thing their that is a device driver. I do not know how to do this. So if someone could help would be appreciated. Also if someone would be able to tell me why this is happening that would help to.
My computer was made by a company that no longer exists. But it has an INTEL motherboard with 400 spd processor. 128mb ram. 14gb maxtor harddrive.

As to the CD ROM drive, it (WIN98SE) couldn't find a suitable driver for your particular CD ROM drive. You'll need to get the drivers for it. Check to see who the manufacturer is and go to their website to get the latest Windows 98 driver file.

Remove the drive in Device Manager. I suspect it's the dual fifo IDE one with the yellow exclamation point. I doubt that a CD ROM drive could be confused with a floppy drive. Anyway, remove that one and reboot. When the computer restarts it will detect hardware. You don't want it to search for the drivers but rather act like you're going to pick one from the list. When you get in there, You'll click on "Have Disk" and then browse to the device driver that you got from the website. This should take care of the CD ROM drive.

boot to a win98 boot disk>> option (2) without CD-ROM support>> at the a:> prompt, type "format c: /s" (without the quotes and with a space between c: and the / symbol)

let this complete,

reboot to boot disk again and use OPTION (1) WITH CD-ROM support, and then follow these directions to have the entire winOS on your HDD:

Place your Windows Installation CD into the CD drive.

( If you're installing Windows 95, substitute 98 with 95 throughout these instructions, for WinME change it to WinME )
Place your Windows startup disk in the drive and start your system.
At the prompt choose option 1: Start computer with CD-ROM support

You will be brought to an A:\> prompt.
Change to a C prompt by typing C: and press enter.

You will now be at a C:\> prompt.
Type MD WIN98 and press enter.
( Make sure you leave a space between MD and WIN98. )

Back at the C:\> prompt.
Type CD E:\WIN98 and press enter.
( Don't forget the space between CD and E:\WIN98. )

Back at the C:\> Prompt,
Type E: and press enter.
( Where E is your CD-ROM, otherwise use your CD-ROM letter. )

You should now be at an E:\WIN98 prompt.
Type COPY *.* C:\WIN98 and press enter.
( Don't forget the spaces between 'copy and *.*' and also between '*.* and C:\WIN98' )
The files needed for Windows will now be copied from your CD to your hard drive.

Back to an E:\WIN98 prompt.
Type C: and press enter.

Back at the C:\> prompt.
Type CD WIN98 and press enter.
( Don't forget the space between CD and WIN98. )

You will now be at a C:\WIN98 prompt.
Type SETUP and press enter.
Installation of Windows will now begin.

I do appreciate your answers and will keep info for future use.
Unfortunately I was unable to do what you mentioned as I had already discovered that my CD Rom was finished and it wasn`t working at all tried it on another computer same thing happened so than I bought a new CD Rom figured my registry was so screwed up would just format and install again. Am so glad I have this info though as I know it will come in handy for the future. Thanks again

ok- just in case you missed the signifigance of the above install script, this way ALL of your win98se setup files are placed on the HDD. Therefore, you will almost never need the win98 CD again when installing or making changes to system settings as the files are already there- no more "insert win98 CD".
