I just installed Windows XP for the first time on my Soyo K7V Dragon Plus MB with the SBlaster Audigy Platinum sound card with the Firewire connector on the Audigy drive. The Device Manager shows the IEEE 1394 controller installed but also shows the firewire connection as a Network Adapter. I'm using the onboard Via Lan > I had to disable the "Firewire network adapter". I have Win2K Pro on this machine and do not have this problem. (Shows only the Via adapter in the Network adapter section) Why does the Firewire adapter show up in the "Network Adapter" section of the Device Mgr in Windows XP ??
Because XP is a little screwy as to what it thinks "Network adapters" are....I know someone who has a problem everytime he turns off his amp to his speakers, XP thinks that a network adapter has been disconnected......
No, that isn't really helpful...have you tried looking fo an updated driver?

What is happening here.
XP is monitoring your Fire wire as a network adapter ..
This is a catch 22 affair ..
If you disable the monitoring it won’t recognize the device swap on the firewire.
if it continues to monitor as a NIC it (Win XP) will / may report a network cable disconnect and drop you from your network connection.

This subject has always bothered me.
I right now have (3) network connections showing for this ONE dsl connection on a stand alone XP machine.
If I check-"show when connected"- you will observe I have (3) connections!
