Can only connect on AOL, Iwant to connect to local Isp

Okay, this is the problem... I am having problems connecting to any ISP but AOL. I don't want to go online under AOL. I would like to connect using my local ISP. I have tried everything I can think of but nothing is working.. can someone Please help before I throw this thing out the door straight to the trash can??!!!! It is connecting under my local ISP but it won't bring up any web pages at all, won't even run any of my programs that have to be online before they run.But is is connecting, just isn't detecting the connection somehow.. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

You didn't indicate what type of browser or such that you are using. If Internet Explorer, you will need to go to "Tools" then "Internet Properties" and in that window click on the "Connection" tab. In there you can configure as to what Internet connection to use. Worst case, click on "Never Dial A Connection" and it will use whatever Internet connection you have already established. Other applications you are using that use the Internet might have a similar setting.

There could be a number of things wrong and without knowing your browser and operating system I can offer some tips that work with Win 98 and Internet Explorer:
1. If your clicking on your IE icon on your desktop screen, don't! If you click on it and it starts to dial AOL, stop and delete that icon. That icon is a shortcut from a preselected setting; via MSN, AOl, etc.
2. Go to My Computer icon, right click and select explore. Double click Dial up Networking. Double click Make New Connection and enter your connection number. Also, name this connection like Joe's or whatever.
3. Next, Go to Control Panel and select Internet Options. Change the Homepage address if it opens at AOL. If you don't have a favorite, enter WWW.Altavista.com. (http://WWW.Altavista.com.) it's my favorite.
4. Next, click on the Connection tab and check that your new connection; 'Joe's' should be set as the default. Make sure that you have 'Always dial my connection' selected. Click on Settings,
then click Properties. Your new connection info should all be there.
5.Close everything and go to your desktop and right click the IE icon by your start selection bar. Select make shortcut. Drag into your desktop. Double click and this should connect you, if not, when you double click the IE icon, select Settings and make sure the Joe's connection is set as the default.

Thanks for the help all! I finally got it figured out. It was the AOL dial-up adapter. I just removed it and all is well again..Thanks again for your input!
