microsofts dial up connection reboots system

Ever here of dial up connection rebooting a system when its supposed to be dialing? This has happened 5-6 times and its rather distressing.

Also, do you know of a way to remove microsoft messenger from startup? It's not listed in the startup folder, and there is no box to uncheck in the options.

Try "start", "programs", "accessories", "system tools", "system information".
Click "tools", then "system configuration utility".
Then click the "startup" tab, and uncheck the program you don't want.

If this if the procedure you are referring to as "options", then you could also look for it in the win.ini file. If you see it under [windows] run=program.exe, load=program.exe, place a semicolon in front of the line(s) i.e. ";run=program.exe", or ";load=program.exe" and save. If that fixes it then you can either delete the entry(ies) or leave with a semicolon.

There are also registry keys which control startup progs. Go to "start", "run", type "regedit" then return.
Carefully look for the program(s) at the end of the following path(s):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run etc.

If a startup program is shown twice in the system configuration utility I referred to above, you can fix it via this method. The extra entry will disappear.

If you mess up the registry and can't restart windows, you will need to resore a good copy of it using this method: from the C:\ prompt (boot floppy), restore a fresh backup of the registry with the command "scanreg /restore". (Win98 for sure, maybe Win95 -not sure)

I have found it in the start/run then type msconfig and hit enter. All of the file win.ini and etc are listed I chose the last tab "Startup" and deselected it in there-Jerry
