deleting files from nav quarantine?

i wasn't sure if i shd post this topic here or in a different section, so i guessed.... this morning i received an email with an attachment that norton anti-virus said had a non-repairable kakworm virus. it quarantined the file and suggested i submit it to them for analysis. i tried to submit it, but they say it's compressed and they don't accept compressed files. (btw, it wasn't a personal message, it was a general message posted on a public forum, so i decided not to worry abt submitting it to symantec to look at, but i wonder if there's an ettiquette abt this in general?) i don't know how to decompress it and i don't want to mess around with it and cause myf any trouble, either. i want to know if there is a way to delete it from my hard drive (i tried "delete" and nav sent me a warning which made me think maybe i was not supposed to do that???) or if i shd just leave it in quarantine forever or what??? also, i sent a message to the list/person who sent the infected message, asking them to stop using attachments and just copy things in if they want to post them. although, i guess it's a little late for giving that advice.... okay, folks, now that i've rambled on, does anyone have any advice?

From the NAV help file:

For data safety, Norton AntiVirus is preset to make a backup copy of a file before attempting a repair. These backups are also stored in Quarantine. If the file is unrepairable, Quarantine automatically deletes it. If the files can be repaired, you may delete the infected item from the Quarantine once the repair is verified


Pretty ambiguous, huh! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif It tells you the file is unrepairable and then doesn't delete it like it's supposed to. I think you got the message when you tried to delete the file from Quarantine because NAV wants you to send it to them. The kakworm virus has been well documented already, so since you couldn't submit it to them, you're probably safe in just deleting it altogether, along with the original email attachment if NAV didn't already do that.

BTW, have you updated to the newest antivirus definitions from the Symantec website. Seems they're posting new ones several times a week lately!

thanks, kim-- i had read the help file already, but as you note, it's not very enlightening! also, the weird part is, i do have the most updated nav stuff. i updated this morning!! i had wondered if it might be a new kakworm permutation or something. anyway, i'm going to just get rid of it now. ugh!! :-)
