Error found during Scandisk

MY hard drive is not allowing me to get into several applications. Whenever i do the message appears. This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. I go into details and it says Winword has a general fault tolerance......module HPOWIN08.dll. Wjat do I do? Also I received amessage saying Scandisk found an error while reading one of the system area on this drive. The damage portion of the disk cantains critical information about the location of some or all files of this drive. Do I need to but another hard drive or can it be fixed. If so How do i fix it.

Repost with the type of Operating System ..ie Win95 or Win98 or Win98SE..I hope it's win98 SE cause it's easier to fix this sort of thing with second edition Win 98. Be sure to state the EXACT wording of the error messages you are getting and someone will give a fix...
