If you shut down any other programs that are running, it may help with scandisk...hit ctrl/alt/del and end task everything except explorer and systray, then run it again, also, when defraging, turn off your screensaver...

Truthfully, that may or may not even help, I've seen the same problem you describe many times and usually it will do it for awhile and then just go away...

Doesn't anyone read TFM anymore? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif The category headings are becoming more meaningless day by day. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

I kind of got tired of all the hassle with defrag and switched to McAfee Disktune, there are a few other third party disk defragmentation tools out there, you can see the results of a recent session here (http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/highrise/11/pics.html). It was about a 2GB partiton, and Win defrag spent 15min to get 17% done. The thing is no matter what, defrag itself is a fairly slow program and if it is not done regularly it can be very frustrating and difficult to complete.

The key is to get it done once and then do it regularly, Soo not to pick on you or anything, but the larger than usual number of posts about defrag today seems to have set off something......I hope we haven't scared you off...

Also, since you are having scandisk problems also you could try running it in DOS, reboot your system and hold the <f8> or <ctrl> keys at the beginning of the boot sequence, when the menu pops up select Command prompt, then type in scandisk c: /autofix (or scandisk_/? for a list of options) (use a space instead of the underscore).

mjc -- Don't get me wrong, I wasn't referring to Charles or Pete at all. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif I meant the same people you were talking about, the ones who post the same problem back-to-back. (TFM = The Freaking Manual). http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif I'm tending more and more towards just posting answers as links to the Guide or MSKB. If you spoon-feed too much, people become lazy. I'm also revising my opinion that the forum needs more categories/sections. So many of the recent first-time posters aren't even bothering to think before they click on one, that it's turning into a free-for-all. Might as well just have Hardware, Software and Other some days. I think Pete does a great job of moderating, answering, and sorting things out, but it's just getting harder and harder to keep up as the site gets more popular. Maybe just growing pains. And finally, what's up with some of the newbies resurrecting and replying to posts that have been dormant for four months or more? Beating a dead horse IMHO. Call this a mild rant, I guess. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hey fellas. I'm not trying to be moderator by any means, but if I'm not mistaken this is a HELP forum, not a gripe forum. For far less energy use, you could have just posted the link you are talking about and helped another. I know it gets frustrating, maybe a day of fishing would relieve some tension http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Soo, I think you get the idea that you need to shut down backround programs (screensavers, scheduled tasks, automated messages...)and then try your maintenance programs. Let us know if it works.

I dont know where the rest of it all came from, but we did still post at least (3) three of the links that had the answers to the initial question.... the rest was just comment and really should have been in 'chat'..

the above post of mine that I left Blank, was not even about this at all.. so, rather than perpetuate this I erased it. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

at the risk of having this taken the wrong way, (this is NOT meant to be criticle!!)- of anyone.

This site has GROWN, and with over 3000 members and only one (very adept) guy moderating it.. there is allot of work that 'pops up', a MASS Prune job may need to be done, or perhaps a section titled "Bitching, Ranting, and Complaining"....like a 'recycle Bin' for posts.. hehe

additionally, Charles does not like to delete ANYTHING, and likes this all to stay 'in tact', as is.. etc.

Tjay,

My comment was meant that because they haven't been around much some standard maintenace(like moving some of the posts, closing doubles) hasn't happened and yes I agree some of the problems could be answered by reading the manuals, but have you read some of them latley? More like reading how not translate a language than to install some hardware. But that is really what we are all here for any way right, help or be helped.

Sea,

I think that your right about chat, was there 6 times while this was going on empty room, maybe I should get ICQ and then message you to head over when we need a late night gripe session (Tjay, too). Yeah we were way OT, at times but you're right we did post some links.

Soo,

Again sorry for the rant session in the middle of your post, but check out the above mentioned links and if your still having a problem come on back and we'll try to figure it out?
