I'm trying to install Office 2000 on a notebook but continually receive a Windows file Protection error about 1/2way thru the installation. The error states 'Windows files must be installed for your installation to proceed''Insert your Service Pack files now'.
However, I'm running W2K Pro with SP 1. Upon placing my SP1 CD in the drive, the same error occurs.

After cancelling out, the next message says 'Error 1932: The windows installer service cannot update the protected windows file'

This happens whether I attempt a local or network installation....

I've even removed the Office registry keys,

The only thing I can think of is that there was a beta version of XP (and considering I hired this notebook from a dealer, I'm not happy that they installed a beta version of an application - very poor) that was running on here that may cause some kind of conflict.

Naturally the M$ website gives no indication of the above error.

What annoys me the most is that it is such a simple installation yet causing me untold grief!!

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Since there was a beta of XP on it the best thing may be to wipe the hd; repartition (if desired), reformat and reinstall a fresh os....

Thanks for the reply mjc. I did consider reformatting and reinstalling the o/s and associated apps but I simply don't have the time (it is required for a presentation today and the issue was only discovered this morning.

What will be interesting to see in the future is if other users experience the same joys I have been when trying to revert to an earlier version of Office...I wonder if M$ implemented this "error" deliberately.......

I didn't really expect that there would be a decent resolution, the best workaround I could come up with was to install Office 95, then upgrade to 97. Once again, upgrading to 2000 caused the same problem as before....but at least I have a compatible word processor and database that can be utilised in our presentation (XP was not compatible with the document management app we are using).

I love these things that happen right before you absolutely need them....

Any way the problem may lie in the compatibility issues with Office 2K, XP and your document management program.

If you found a work around then run with, no, not the best but at least you'll get through the presentation.

Windows File Protection

Protects core system files from being overwritten by application installs. In the event a file is overwritten, Windows File Protection will replace that file with the correct version. By safeguarding system files in this manner, Windows 2000 mitigates many common system failures found in earlier versions of Windows.
