Hi Guys
Have PC that dials up to ISP for email. When connected
to the server, I start Outlook '97 and start to download
mail and error message 'The MAPI spooler has shutdown
unexpectedly. Close all mail enabled apps before attempting
to logon again'. Can anyone tell me where/what may cause
this? This connection has worked well for over two years
now and has only just started happening. Win98 OS, low spec
PIII. Am grateful for any replies.

Cheers!

Try increasing the virtual memory on your computer or shuting down other apps before starting Outlook.

Hi again. This can happen without any other apps running - only use a telnet session & WORD on the PC anyway. How do I increase virtual memory? where does the MAPI spooler reside? Is it a file, does anyone know whether I can 'clean it out' our what! Thanks for any advice. Bit of a sad one for me......
Cheers.

The Mapi spooler is cleaned out when you remove all emails from your email profile.(IE: both the inbox and outbox ).Check to see if there are any unsent emails in your "outbox", if there is then delete those emails. You may have a problem with a certain email that the "spooler" is trying to send when you start Outlook. ( to do this start Outlook when you are not connected to the internet. Choose to work "offline".)

Virtual Memory is setup by using the "performance" page in the "system" icon. ( if I remember correctly.) Windows by default will manage this for you, but you can go in and choose to manage it yourself by setting a "min" and "max" virtual memory file size. If your not currently managing this file yourself then it is proably best to let Windows do it.
