cd-reader not functioning

my uncle's cd-reader seems to be not working. i noticed that it's listed as a slave drive when the boot screen pops up. the driver seems to be installed fine so i thought it might be the hardware itself. i decided that i would take it home with me and test it out by disconnecting my cd drive and connecting his to mine. my question is, are there any precautions if any that i should take in undertaking this experiment?
it seems pretty simple but i just wanted to make sure.

NOPE......But be sure to disconnect the power cord to your computer prior to opening up the case. Just put the CD Rom on the way the one you have now was on & see if it works!
