When I am running any program, or even if I am simply at my desktop and I leave my mouse alone for four or five minutes an error message comes up saying that Explorer has caused a fault and I have to click close. This doesn't affect any program that I am running at the time, but it closes off all the stuff in my start up row, (bottom right of screen, y'know!) it is very annoying as you may imagine. This happens EVERY time I leave the mouse alone for a few minutes. Can anyone help me please!!

"All my stuff at the bottom right" is the key here!....You might have too many "resident" programs running concurrently and possiblly one of them is (in combination with a screen saver coming on) creating a simultaneous polling of the cpu and causing a L1 or L2 cache miss which in turn sends Windows into a funk! Try disabling or delaying the initilization of you screen saver to about 30 min or so and see if it goes away.....if that doesnt do it......try changing the settings of each of the "resident" programs (the ones on the lower rt. next to time) so they dont come on at startup. good luck

Thanks for the speedy advice. My replies are few and far between 'cause I use my parents PC do log onto this site. I'll certainly check out all that info you gave me and I'll let you know how I go. Thanks once again!

I tried all that you said and I didn't have any joy. The full messages are as follows, (these may give you some clues!)

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff9d709

Another is:-
EXPLORER caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0003:00008fb3

And the third is:-
EXPLORER caused an exception 6d007fH in module WEBCHECK.DLL at 015f:78b32599

(I'm not even on-line when the last one pops up)

Hope you can help further!

Thanx!!

The chip is (don't laugh) 200Mhz, RAM is 64 meg. Op sys is Windows 98. Age of computer is 1 year old, but Mobo was changed recently and it was off of a friend so i don't know how old that is, at a guess I would say a couple of years. This problem has only started since we changed the mobo. It has no modem in as yet and he installed me a windows tuning kit that is in my start ups and my shut down facility disappeared in favor of an instant shut down icon in the start ups!

Hope this can help you!

Many of the so called "tune-up" programs can cause said errors especially if they cannot connect to the Internet. Many of them are "adware" or "spyware" and need an active conncetion. Since there is no modem on this machine the program may be trying to do something that is currently impossible and then taking Explorer down with it. Try diasbling the "tune-uP" program, it should have an option under preferences or options (or whatever it calls it configuration section) to disable it at start up. If after running for a while with it disabled, if the errors are gone, then go ahead and follow whatever instructions it has to uninstall it. Then find a program called AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.de) to remove the advertising software (the probable source of the errors) from your system.
