View Full Version : Playing AVI files with Windows Media Player
question1

I have some training material that I want to people to see; however, I cannot get Windows Media Player 6.4.07 to play it. It gives me an error saying that the file format is invalid (error=8004022F).
If I go in to look at the properties on this file, it says that the video is not available: cannot find 'vides:mp42' decompressor. Is there something that I need to download to get the player to play this file???
If so, please let me know.
Thanks in advance

You need a Mpeg4 codec go here to download it:
http://codec.addr.com/codecs/
Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

There are lots of different versions of compression for avi clips to decode these, for example go control panrel / sounds mulimedia / devices tab then expand the video compression and you will see which ones you can play.
Ghost is the man and if he says mpeg4 codec will do it then it will.
If you id where the file came from you can find out what compression they used when recording it.

You may need one of the DivX codecs or the "smp patch" depending on what you're trying to play...
I would try www.divx-digest.com (http://www.divx-digest.com) for the codecs and do a google search to find the patch...

Oops...shoulda been SMR patch...the SMR patch allows you to play certain avi files produced by a particular organization...
Since you don't say what kind of avi file this is, or where you got it, I figured I'd throw out all the suggestions I had...
Do you have the most recent DirectX? Media Player 6.4 SHOULD play anything out there if you have the codec for it, but you might want to upgrade...
