I have two PC's connected together with a cross-over cable.
I cannot get my pcAnywhere to control either computer.
I have pcAnywhere ver. 9.0 and Win '98 on each PC.
I have tried using "NetBIOS" and "TCP/IP" protocols to connect
to the other PC, but neither has worked.
Can anyone offer me any hints or advice on how to do this?

The best way to use Pcanywhere on a network.
Is to setup the program to use the same protocol as your default in the win98 network
For example I use IP and have Netbios Binding as my default
So In PcAnywhere I have both the Be a Host and remote control set to use Netbios as the only protocol to use.
Starting the Host program first. Then the remote control .
Allow the Host to complete startup process before starting remote control.
The Remote Control Program should then scan the network and find the Host program.
And show it as host. Just click on the host listed and you should be off and running

Netbios binding works well for me, you can see the pcanywhere install help (http://www.groovyweb.uklinux.net/RemoteAccess/?page_name=pcAnywhere-%20Install%20Guide) for set up details.
Alternatively there is the free option of RealVNC (http://www.realvnc.com)
or the pay for but very easy to use GoToMyPC (http://www.groovyweb.uklinux.net/RemoteAccess/?page_name=GoToMyPc)

RemotePC (http://www.remotepc.com) is another option to go for as it is easy to install and use.
It is free from IP/Proxy issues and is also affordable (costs $9.95/month).

There is another way and it's probably more resililent.
In your Windows dir (or WINNT) you should see a dubdir called Drivers. Within that dir, you should see a subdir called ETC. In there you will see to files, one called HOSTS the other called LMhosts. Review these files and add the appropriate information for LMhosts NAME / DNS Name resolution.
It is advisable to REBOOT. Then you should be abble to connect quite easily by using the name.
This is particulary usefull if there is no DNS or WINS server on the network (LAN or Dialup).
NOte: Win9X likes to use LMhosts, while later OSes like HOSTS. But I would config both of them.
Hope it helps.
