View Full Version : cannot open jpg files
I am using Windows ME, a new computer (HP XT856) I have severAL .jpg files on zip or cds that I cannot open up.
The error message comes up with
- format is invalid or not supported -
I have tried right clicking on picture and open with internet explorer. It just comes up with a small white box in the left have corner with an X in it.
The program I have is ArcSoft Photostudio 2000. I also try to open with My Photo Center program, but get a similiar err
- this file format not supported with this version -
I see I do have other jpg files that came with the computer that open up fine. I copied the file, and renamed it with a .bmp extension and it will open up. But I must be missing something.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I thought I had a photo software that came with Windows ME but I must have removed it? I would like to try opening the pictures with the program
THANKS!!

Normally .jpg is a file associated with Internet Explorer, if you have IE5.5, go to add/remove programs and click on " IE 5.5 " it should pop up with an option to repair it. Or you can go to view/folder settings/file types and try to reassociate it/them with IE.

The file is corrupted, or saved in a format the application doesn't recognize.

Yup, same as above.

Application does not recognize file format.

File format is recognized.

Are these the files that won't open as jpgs? Then guess what! Somebody gave them the wrong file extension! If you give a file a .jpg extension, when it is actually a .bmp, then the application program will try to open it as a .jpg, and will fail.

Start->Programs->Accessories->Paint
Start->Programs->Accessories->Imaging

bt: It is unfortunately possible that you will not be able to open the jpegs in question. But if you can rename them to bmp files, then open them in whatever ME has for that (don't have experience with ME..does it still have Paint and Kodak Imaging?), then save it as a bmp there..you should be able to open it in your ArcSoft program. If necessary, then can resave them as jpeg..depending on what they are. (Every time you save as a jpeg, you compress the file further...thereby getting more jpeg distortion, so you might want to leave it as a bmp file.)
Recently, I emailed a pic through Hotmail. File name was "cat&dog.jpg". Kept coming through as a little box with the x you described. Had emailed tons of pics..spent some few minutes trying to figure out what the heck?..and changed the file name to "catanddog.jpg" and it opened fine. M$ computer hanging apparently on the ampersand. A thought..check the file name.
I have Paint Shop Pro. Was working on some old family pics for a friend and wanted to put them on CD so that he would have them. He doesn't have PSP so I saved a pic in the tif format. The file wouldn't open (in Imaging) by double clicking on it...same error message you're getting. And it wouldn't even open in PSP where I made it in the first place. If I duplicated the file first, then saved it in PSP as a tif file..it opened fine. So had to duplicate each pic, then save as a tif. That same sort of weirdness may have happened with the program that made the original jpgs you're talking about.
