I am at present unable to go on the net using IE5.5
I favour IE over Netscape.
As a result all my favourites and set up is on IE.
When I launch IE it gives me
"The page cannot be displayed error"

When I type a different URL it gives me
"The page cannot be displayed error"

When I click on my favourites it gives me
"The page cannot be displayed error"

Basically any URL I type into IE5 address it gives me
"The page cannot be displayed error"

I think the problem could have occurred when I was working with another application that was trying to access the Internet. It tried doing this through Netscape.

Please could you tell me how I can get IE (my default browser) to work again.

Regards

S Alam

try going to internet options, look under programs tab, and look for a little box at the bottom that says; " make internet explorer the default browser", or something to that affect. Just check it and see if that helps.

Sorry this option is not possible i.e.
tools/internet options/
"make to default browser" is not available.

Note I can use Netscape but not IE5.5

go to : Tools> INternet Options> Program TAB.

click on "Reset Web settings"

and below this you will see a box that says "Internet Explorer should check to see that it is the DEFAULT browser."

be sure you have checked this box.

(as iisbob said above)

Still does not work

run Internet Explorer repair tool.

go to: control panel> add remove programs> highlight IE>click remove. See repair/restore options.

otherwise, I'm about stumped.

edit: do you have a firewall running??

and what was the other application you were trying to run when this all started??

The problem is occurring due to Zone Lab SW that functions as a firewall to prevents cyber attacks etc.

The software was also trying to stop me using Netscape.
I have now turned it off and they are both working.

I now have to find out how to correctly setup ZoneAlarm software and the other's in the suite so it functions properly and allows me to use web browse.

ahhhhhhh HAAAAAAAAAAA!!

just as I suspected.

hopefully you are not using aol 5.0??

open ZA control panel> click "Programs".

scroll through the programs list until you see Internet Ex.

allow (put in a Green check mark) and also allow connect internet and local, and allow server on the applications that you *want* to connect
ZA will actually block itself from connecting unless you give it permission.

do not allow "PassLock" status to anything.. the lock is for an eventuality when you need to LOCK/STOP all internet activity.
