Mornin' Folks

A friend of mine called with a problem. His wife and daughter went on a deleting fest. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

Seems mom downloaded Netscape and deleted (not uninstalled) the IE icons.

Daughter got mad and deleted (not uninstalled) Netscape.

Now they can't find a browser for surfin'.

I know you can't get rid of IE this easily so how can they get the IE icon back?

Thanks in advance http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

well the icon should be in the recycle bin you can't delite these with out going to add/remove programs? if not there your going to have to do some searching. Tell your freind he ought to leave it the way it is and let the two little girls figure it out.Not being judgemental but geeesssss. But any way to get back to the problem is it the Desk top IE they lost? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I'm with you. I laughed for quite awhile before I posted that. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

What I told him was "Get an apartment..." No no, just kiddin'. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I asked him about the recycle bin and he said "no". What I ended up tellin' him was to go to windows explorer, program files, right click on internet explorer, click create shortcut, drag icon to desk top. It ain't pretty, but it works.

YODA, have you really posted 178 posts in less than a month? That might be a record!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

Thanks alot.

If your friend is using IE 5.5 have him upgrade to 6.0 the instaliation should repair the icons.
If you try to remove IE through add and remove programs it can't be removed but will ask if you want to repair it. You might try that I haven't seen it repair anything yet but maybe it can replace an icon. It has to be good for something

Another thing he might try go to control panel--> internet tools-->advanced untick show internet explorer on desk top reboot then go back and tick it reboot again.
He could also try draging the one from the quick start tray to the desk top if it is still there

Internet Explorer Repair Tool...

Open Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, look for Internet Explorer and Internet Tools. Click Uninstall. A box will pop up asking if you want to do one of a couple of things, click the one for the repair tool.

Otherwise he can uninstall IE and reinstall it, that would do it too. If Tweak UI is installed, it has an option to repair icons. That should work as well.

Thanks everyone,

I sent him all the responses. It'll be interesting to see which solution finally does it for him. I'll be talkin' to him later today.

Thanks again

I tried deleting my icon and installing IE 6.0 and it replaced it. I was going to upgrade anyway so I tried it and it worked also put the connect to the internet icon back. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Evenin' Folks,

This is turnin' out to be a little more complicated than I thought.

Not much is really workin'.

Yoda, like I said, nothing in recycle bin and yes, she deleted every IE icon she could find.

rond36, on the control panel suggestion... he has internet options instead of internet tools. Found the "show IE on desk top" check box. Tried what you said, no joy there. I like the idea of upgrading but he hasn't tried this yet.

Pete, I thought this would be the one. BUT he tells me that in the add/remove programs part of the control panel there is no listing of internet explorer, therefore no repair feature. So I check my computer. No listing?? Whaaa? We both have Win98se.

So here we are. Intenet explorer is listed in windows explorer. He can access it that way, so it is there, but he can't bring it back to the original settings and icons. At least it works...just kinda funny.

He'll probably end up upgrading to ie6.

Maybe a laptop that he keeps locked would work... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
