Hey
From what I found... If you have a system without CD-R software Platinum 5 is a fresh install.
If you have a system that allready has Version 4 this must be completely removed. Went on to say that using Add/Remove doesn't get it all. Probably Registry entries etc.
REcommended going to Roxio website for instructions on how to complete the process. I haven't browsed there yet.
Everything in the past has been Adaptec as Roxio bought them out.
All of this was given by a Roxio official during a review when Platinum 5 came out on the market.
Luck.

ok well I saw the part about not being able to reinstall.. I have Easy CD C 4, also- these CD Creator and CD Direct) have their own uninstall in the context menu.
Wonder if I should use that or windows add/remove........
no fun.. why don't they just simply say this someplace ??

Sea,
You might want to wait to hear from MJC as I seem to remember him saying that there was something negative in advancements from version 4.

Standard troubleshooting for Easy CD Creator under Windows 98
Software Installation
System Environment
CD-Rom/CD-Reader/CD-Media
Software Installation:
Make sure there is no other CD-burning software application on the system, including other versions of Easy CD Creator.
Reinstall the software, using default install directory.
so much for that!
now, want to hear what mjc has to say.
and why do they have their own uninstall and don't want you to use it.?????????

Sea i have 5.0 and its pretty awesome, if you burn a audio cd it automically puts the cd text on it.
Also yeah who have to uninstall the 4.0, but you can have other cd burning software on your pc, and roxio tech support is not real good , like you found out.

* fell asleep *
This same Roxio official ( probably the janitor ) went on to say that a person needed to contact tech support for instructions on how to uninstall Version 4 completely as Add/Remove was not sufficient. And this person didn't elaborate on the fact that Version 4 w/updates has un-install properties.
Heck. Use the Test Run System by BB. And the @switch option. After using uninstall program.
Luck.

Tech "Support"- is almost non-existent.
Why don't they make it simple like most other upgrades or clean installs??
and NOWHERE (anyplace I can find) mentions the uninstall feature listed in the context menu!

It seems that 5 has been having all sorts of problems...which of course could be related to an incomplete removal of ver 4....everything from just burning coasters to major registry corruption....(never made the connection until right now, that the problems could be incomplete removal of the old version)
But for the most part, on this one if it ain't broke don't fix....
Yeah use test run....
But basically what I have found is that 5 works ok from a clean install, it does offer support for more burners (yeah I guess they all do when updated...), and all those nifty new features Di was talking about, but if you have ver 4 already installed what ranchdog was talking about is the way to go,

There are pro's and con's about all hardware.
Some real unhappy people with 2K tried the Platinum 5. Crash City. The Take Two portion smeared 2K. Patches out for that now.
One review I read on 5 stated if you have Ver. 4 w/upgrade... Save your money. The MP3 file benefit is the only advantage.
I use Ver 4 w/upgrade, it has the fancy interface and the fancy buttons for selection. And I slow the burn speed down a notch.
Sooo I called my bud who went the 5 route and ask him the skinny. (He had Ver 4 w/o upgrade) He uninstalled everything just like we normally do and re-booted. Installed 5 and re-booted. Direct CD didn't work so he re-installed Direct CD. Re-booted and everything works honky. This is with a P111 and 98SE.
But he also eluded I'm not missing anything.
Take a deep breath and go for it.

I just installed v5 over V4 with no probs. It uninstalled DirectCD 4 itself, before installing the new version.
MP3 is not the only benefit - it also recognises 80 minute CD-Rs, which I could never fill on V4.
BTW - I'm using NT, so that may make a difference. And I'm staying with it - it's as solid as a rock. If I need USB I'll use my laptop (with W2000) and network the systems together.

Hi and welcome
mind saying HOW you uninstalled it ??
did you use the uninstall feature that they do not acknowlege is there ??
did you do it in safe mode??
perhaps your 80 minute problem was the NT factor, because I have not had one problem with burning 80 minute cd's. (even 80 minute cd-rw's.

I had 5 given to me and i updated 3.05c to the 5 version-freakin' nightmare! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif
I spent 4 hours uninstalling and scrubbing my registry to clean it out of both before reinstalling it-then it worked peachy! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif However the only really neat feature i like about it is the ability to remove the direct CD icon from the system tray-i hate to have it filled with icons!
I started using Nero-and to be honest i like it much better ( plus it works with no hitches on my W2K partition ), it supports more Disc burning formats than EasyCD and it has all the same bell and whistles for less price ( well, it is if you paid for it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ).
NTI pro is not to bad-but i don't care much for it's interface.
As for burning MP3's-in my opinion nothing beats MusicMatch for making music CD's.

One comment. If a program has its own uninstall link in the Start Menu I always use that one rather than the Add/Remove Programs. Usually, but not always, it will do a better job of it.
I can't think of the program now, but I uninstalled something about 2 years ago from Add/Remove Programs and had a real nightmare cleaning up...then found out it had an uninstall of its own, which I had never noticed, or maybe just didn't pay attention to. Ended up having to reinstall it and uninstall using its own link. Worked great that time.
Norton System works maybe??? After searching what little mind I have left it seems that might be it...
The only reason I can think of is maybe the program's uninstall routine removes more of the registry entries than the Windows Add/Remove Programs routine does.

Hi everyone,
Not sure if it's too late to add my 2 cents but if for any reason you decide 5 isn't for you then maybe you should take a look at Nero 5.5.I too was a die hard fan of Adaptec products.Owned 2 different versions of CD Creator, another obscure proggie called Just Audio! and finally Roxio which turned out to be a living nightmare. This is just my personal experience but Roxio virtually destroyed NT and on another machine running 98se and ME the Take 5 feature would always cause the system to crash(might have been fixed with a patch). Not to mention the flashy interface hogged my system way too much.
Nero has an user friendly interface, allows for a much greater control of the burning settings and it's packed with features such as DVD recording*,80 min. cds,drag-and-drop, mp3 and wma support and best of all I can even load it on my old 486.Most likely I'll never turn back to Roxio.
You can check their site here : http://www.nero.com/en/index2.htm
* DVD Recording. It's a plug-in/encoder that allows you to record .mpg, .avi, .mov, .asf or .wmv files into a disc and playback on SVCD compatible DVD players.I haven't tested this feature yet.
Cheers,
Rod
