I have found that my cable ISP seems to be in control of my IE6 proxy settings on Win98. I want to make some changes to access a server on my local intranet, but if I disable or change the settings, the new settings work for a couple of minutes and then they seem to get automatically restored. I don't like the idea of the cable company being in control of my settings. Does anyone have any ideas to disable their ability to modify my settings?

I was able to solve this problem. My ISP's setup software installed a hidden Browser Helper Object called ProxyReset executing out of AHIEHELP.DLL. This thing periodically re-enabled the IE6 Connections-Lan Settings-'auto config script' box to be sure IE6 would load its config from their server. I was able to disable this by removing the entry under Browser Helper Objects. This all seems a little heavy-handed as it removed my ability to setup the proxy exceptions needed to access servers on my local intranet.
