Joystick Calibration Problem within Red Baron 3D Game

When using Windows 95, I had no difficulty calibrating my Microsoft SideWinder 3D Pro joystick (version 1.0) in the game Red Baron 3D (version 1.0). Then I upgraded to Windows 98 (version 4.10.2222A) and installed a new Creative Sound Blaster 16 (plug & play) sound card. Shortly after attempting to reload version 1.0 of the joystick set-up software, I got the following error message:

This program caused an illegal operation and will be shut down. DSHELL caused a segment not present fault in module _MSTEST.EXE at 0004:000020f9

So I uninstalled everything then downloaded the Microsoft SideWinder 3D Pro software (version 3.0) and was able to get most of the joystick controls to respond in the Windows joystick properties test routine. However, I still needed to calibrate the joystick within the game. As the "readme" file instructed, I set up the game to run in single player "windowed mode", right clicked to bring up the joystick calibration routine, but the latter froze thereafter. Control-alt-delete brought the following error message:

This program caused an illegal operation and will be shut down. Baron caused an invalid page fault in module BARON.EXE at 016f:00522508.

Any suggestions on how I can calibrate this joystick within the game? If possible, I'd like to keep version 3.0 of the joystick software, as the hat switch now provides 4 additional views. My second choice would be to find a way to successfully reinstall the version 1.0 software and see it work. The third choice would be to buy a new fully compatible joystick and sell the existing one.

Did you upgrade an existing install of 95 or do a clean install of 98?

What version of DirectX were you running and what version are you running now?

Is version 3.0 the latest version of the drivers?

Have you updated the sound card and video card drivers to the most recent versions?

MJC:

Thanks for your interest. In reply to your questions:

1. I did a clean install of Windows 98.

2. I'm running DirectX 8.1 (version 4.08.01.0881) which I believe is the latest upgrade available. I was running this when I reinstalled Baron 3D recently and attempted to get the joystick to work.

3. According to Microsoft, version 3.0 of the Sidewinder Pro 3D setup software (including drivers) is the latest upgrade available.

4. I have upgraded the sound card, video card, and gameport drivers for Windows 98. The sound card (Creative Sound Blaster 16 Plug & Play) driver is: SB16AWE.INF. The video card (Pine SiS 6326 AGP) driver is 6326_w8m. The gameport joystick driver is Microsoft joystick.inf (version 4.08.01.0881).

P.S.) My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 15GLe on SiS 6326.

Hi RobertH,

I have the same joystick but I'm using a Creative SoundBlaster Awe64 ISA soundcard. Just downloaded the software 3.02 and installed it. No problems as of yet, haven't tried any games. The question I have is did you add/calibrate the joystick first through the controlpanel-gamingoptions before upgrading directx? When I upgraded directx first before calibrating it created problems for me.

Ron:

I upgraded to DirectX 8.1 before I attempted to calibrate the joystick. You were right, there is a newer version of the software (3.02)(SWGameEN.exe), so I deleted the previous version and downloaded the latter. Although buttons 1-8 and the 8-position hat switch work, I have no "rotation" (or bend) response in the joystick column, and the slider is unresponsive? Any ideas where I go from here?

Hi RobertH,

Only thing that I can think of is what position is your switch (the one at the bottom back), mine is set for one dot.Hope this helps.

You also may want to try removing the joystick in safe mode (from device mangaer...at least check to make sure that there ar no duplicate or "ghost drivers") and then reinstalling it...
