I recently tried to download I,E,6, but lost the connection and canceled.
My original I.E.5 is still on the desktop but has developrd some wierd problems,ie.when I click it to open it says navigation cancelled, the go button for opening addresses has GONE!! but Link`s, Favorites, and direct
mp3 sites work fine. Also the pages I do access seem smaller and fainter as though it`s in safe-mode. I have just completed a sys restore but, the problem remains. Where`s the GO BUTTON??????????.Thank`s, Tom.

Might be better to have another go at d/l IE6. save the file to a folder on disc & open it from there.

If that doesnt work, try going to System Tools -> Sytem Information. Under tools, you should find an Internet Explorer Repair Tool.

I downloaded IE. 6 onto a zip disc, but when it started setup I got this
"Setup was unable to connect to the Microsoft download site or your system administrator's download server to retrieve the instruction file for the Setup program. This could be caused by proxy server settings on your computer that are not valid, a busy Internet, or other problems with your current Web browser". I also looked for Internet repair tool, but I don`t have one!! I am running win98. Cheers, Tom.

Tom, Go to control panel, add/remove programs, scroll down to Internet
Explorer, highlight then click on remove and it will give you a choice of adding or repairing. Hope this helps.

You might also consider going to this site (http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win95/msiexpl.html), and downloading IE 6 with the installer so that you don't need to be connected to Net or Microsoft for installation.
MSKB article on IE 5 repair (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q194177) Personally, I still use and prefer and haven't heard anything bad about IE 5 with the updates...so think is 5.02.

I can`t find IE in the add-remove program list, I know it used to be there.
When I click on the IE icon on my desktop I have to open it in explorer, it opens my home page on the right with the pc tree on the left, with no sign of the IE icon in the header just the ms explorer. I think IE no longer exists on my p.c. I downloaded the version of IE 5 that needs no internet connection to install, takes 2 hours. When I tried to open it to install, a message briefly appears, I think it says "end of central directory signature not found". I also tried IE 5.5 , it did the same.
Any ideas?????? Tom.

Tom, In add/remove programs did you look under Microsoft Internet Explorer?
If still not there go to Start/programs/accessories/system tools/system information then click on tools and there should be an option there.
good Luck!!

Tom,
I just had a similar problem yesterday.
Here's what I did:
went to add/remove in control panel - it was not there.(although I was using it)
I deleted all icons and also in the start menu/program menu and any shortcuts to IE.
I then went to M$ windows update page, and let it find all criticle updates that my pc needed. (I had IE 5.01 which I could not get to restore or reinstall)
after getting the "criticle" updates installed, I downloaded IE 5.5.
this is the first time I have used IE above 5.01(on my own pc). While I noticed no improvements to my working (past tense) IE5.01, it did however either uninstall or repair it enough to allow IE5.5 to install and it works (so far) as stable as my old IE5.01.
give it a try, can't hurt.

Thank`s Sea,
I went to the MS update page but, there was no mention of the version of IE that is now partially running on my p.c.(4.72). This was loaded when I did a system restore from my original win 98 disk, I did have 5.5 before I tried downloading and installing v6.0 ,wich is where this Saga started. I have tried looking for the IE repair tool on my win98 disk, no luck. Maybe it can be downloaded from somewhere on the net, I don`t know. As I mentioned the version I have running at present is at least letting me surf the net, albeit in it`s own wierd fashion. I am a bit cautious about uninstalling it in case I end up with no access again, my homelife would`nt be worth living, LOL. If you or the other Folks can think of owt else I would appreciate the advise. Tom.

tom- 4.72 sounds like Netscrape??
kay- it was through my own error after FULL Restore I was putting in old and NEW software that I like and need and somehow IE 5.0 got messed up while trying to get service pack installed.
the above left me with a working IE 5.5 and I see NO improvements- it's exactly the same as 5.01.
(at least in appearance and functionability)

Thanks, Sea..was curious and a bit wary. Like 5, and would just as soon stick with it. Son downloaded the complete 5 with both service packs and stuck it on a CD, so ready to install it if and when. Thought I had heard that the only real change in 5.5 was the Print Preview, but I usually only print "selections" off webpages and don't need it anyway.

Try downloading the Explorer 6 to another file you've created. Customize the installation and have the installation download everything to this new file. It could be called IE6, or something different than "Internet Explorer", under "Program Files".
Both versions of Explorer can be in the same computer. Create all your shortcuts and that's that. Afterwards, you can delete the contents of the "Internet Explorer" and move the new Explorer to that file.
It worked fine with me. The 5.5 version did some weird things after I installed the 6. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif So I went ahead and deleted manually the whole 5.5. I haven't had any problems since.
Good luck.
