View Full Version : IE Tour Loading at Start Up

Hi all,
After recently reformatting, I installed IE 5.5 off a disc provided by my ISP. The disc also entered all the relevant DUN settings for the ISP.
Ever since installing it, a dialogue box opens when I start up the PC. The box simply says "IE 4 Tour.dll can't be found". As I'm not connected to the 'net at the time, the page doesn't load, and I simply quit to close it. I'm running Win 98SE.
It does not appear in the start-up list of programs, nor does it appear when hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del.
Any ideas on how to get rid of it appearing at start-up? Or does IE 5.5 need to be re-installed from another disc?

Run msconfig from the run box in the start menu
then look at the tabs win.ini and system .ini
You should find a command line that has “Shell=explorer
If you find that and the line reads like Shell=explorer.exe Tour.dll
Use the edit option and remove everything after Shell=explorer.exe

A quick google search and I found this (http://www.dllstorage.com.ua/dll/I.html) page, where the dll can be downloaded.
Now where to put it and do you really need the program that requires it are the next two questions.
c:\windows\system\ (as noted at the top of the linked page) is a good guess for the first question.
"Probably not" is my guess for the second question. Look here (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/win98/maintain/first.asp?frame=true#d) and click the fourth item (Clean Out Your Startup Group) to find lesser known places programs can hide that start everytime you boot.
edit: listen to Rick - sounds like he's seen this before...
Thanks Rick - I learned something! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

There is another area where the IE4Tour.dll is used
It is part of the command line to display the Channels Bar / window on the Desktop
Unless you are Very comfortable working within the register
I’d suggest using something Like the Tweak program from microsoft to disable the channel display option on the desktop

Rick
Are you referring to TweakUI? Or another MS Tweak program?

All fixed now. No more tour box.
I couldn't find the any reference to it in system.ini & win.ini, nor did inserting the .dll file in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer get rid of it (It did allow it to load properly though but it had no option for preventing it running at start-up).
The "fix" was removing/ rolling back IE5.5 to 5.01 using Add/Remove Programs.
A simply reinstall of 5.5 from another disc fixed it, and now, no more bloody MS offering guided tours!!!
Cheers

Yes I was referring to Tweakui
But you fixed it so it doesn’t matter.
I haven’t used tweak in a long time so I wasn’t sure if it had an option to disable the Channel Bar displayed on the desktop.
Like the upgrade from to many of MS products
It adds items you have already marked as disabled or remove
without asking you if you want them.
