I have had a heck of a time finding out if Office 97 is compatible with Windows XP. What do people know? Also, we have a brand new Dell Optiplex that's clean, no programs. It came with Windows 98 se. What would be the best way to upgrade to Windows XP (maybe I should post this second question elsewhere, but if anybody can point me in the right direction, it would be appreciated). Thanks.

#1) I don't personally know why Office '97 would not work with XP- Office 2000 does.
#2) I would :
a) turn on computer.
b) put winXP cd in CD tray.
c) reboot the computer and when you see the "Press any key to boot to CD..." press any key.
I have found this to be a much better way of installing XP rather than doing it from within windows.
the rest is quite easy just follow the onscreen instructions. You will have options as to which files system (FAT32 or NTFS) as well as other things to choose from.

Thanks for the reply. As I look and look, that is the conclusion I am coming to as well (re. Office 97), that there should be no compatibility problems. It has just been hard getting someone like Microsoft to come out and state this. As for installing XP, I am getting confused about setting up a dual boot system vs. xp only vs. a clean install vs. installing over Win 98. The new computer only has win98 on it, so we have nothing to save. If a clean install is the way to go, then maybe that's the way to go. I like the idea of a dual-boot system, but something tells me that down the road that could cause some hassles and confusion.

I have a dual boot win98se/winXP pro and have not booted back to win98se since the second day.
(well..ok- I do check now and then to see that it's still there)

Office 97 works fine in win XP Pro (at least on my computer http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif ) I cannot complain. XP generally is very reliable and trustworthy, the only area where it kind of disappoints me is when it comes to games.
