I recently purchased an older - type compaq computer. I have had it for a month and was going to upgrade the hard-drive to 2 gig drive. Now the first thing I did was take out the old 500MB drive and put the new 2 GiG drive in that had already had Win95 Installed on them. this 2 Gig drive worked great in another computer but it wouldn't work in the Compaq. So I thought about FDISKING it and Formatting under the Compaq. Well I did this then I ran into more problems than it was worth so I decided to put the old Win95 500 Meg Drive back in and live with it. This is where everything breaks loose. This computer is a Compaq Deskpro 4/33I. It has a 80486 Processor with 12 Megs of Memory. It worked great until I started playing with it. Now after I put the old 500 MB HD back in , it doesn't detect teh drive, so I booted from a Win98 Bootdisk to maybe at least FDISK it and format it so the comptuer would recognize it but now when I FDISK, it says "No Fixed Disk Present". The drive is in correctly all cables are firlmy secured and they are on CORRECTLY. The drive spins up and does everything normal other than Showing up. Can anyone help with this ?

First check out this Compaq link: How to install DOS on a New Drive (http://web14.compaq.com/falco/detail.asp?FAQnum=FAQ2096). The link on the page to where to find the ROMpaq is no longer valid, so you'll have to search for your model on the support site, hopefully they still have a listing for it.

Then be prepared to spend several hours doing the reinstall. First have any disks needed for the install ready. If you have the original Compaq disks this will be a whole lot easier. Then check to see if you can enter the BIOS setup, if you can you may be able to set the drive to autodetect. That may clear up the problem, if not follow Compaq's instructions and act as if the drive is new. Maybe even put it into another machine as a secondary drive and format it there. The Compaq restore process creates the needed partitions, that is why when you changed drives you lost access, the Compaq system partition wasn't on the new drive.
