Help, I've reloaded Outlook Express 5 and I can no longer recieve attachments. Have I changed settings somewhere and blocked them? I have had friends repeatedly send them and they come with only the envelope icon and no attachment icon anywhere. Hoping you can help.

Hi Suey

Are you running any antivirus or firewall programs?

What happens if you try to send yourself a small attachment; then the same software is both sending and receiving them so this would rule out that sort of conflict?

Hi Paul, I am running McAfee Virus Scan program. I tried your suggestion and sent myself a Word document as an attatchment from my computer and guess what, I recieved it perfectly. So why from my computer and not from other ones? hoping you can help.

(1)I have never used McAfee so don't know if it could be stripping the attachments for security reasons (this might only apply to certain file types like .exe but I don't know if McAfee can be configured to do this); unlikely though, since your own attachment to yourself worked! Do you know the file type of the attachment that didn't reach you; and what size it was? Your mail server may have reject a very large one.

(2)Are you sure that the sender did actually attach the attachment and that it wasn't just a forwarded message or a message with (say a picture file included in the body of the message rather than an attachment).

(3)Do you know which eMail program the sender was using. You can either ask or you may get the info from the eMail's properties (Rclick on the eMail, select Properties then the Details Tab and scroll down to see if there is a line towards the end starting X-Mailer). Certain transformations happen to eMails when the sending and receiving programs are different or on different platforms.

Paul, thank you so much for your help. Just thought I would let you know that there were a number of different attachments that I didnt receive but when I checked the properties I discovered that they where all MAPI files that I had not enabled to recieve on virus scan. Hopefully this has solved the problem. Thanks again.

Ahh, dont believe it, still cant recieve attatchments. they are sent to a number of people and they are all receiving them so it is obviously a problem with my set up.

Have you tried stopping McAfee from starting at startup or at least unenabling its email support to see if this makes any difference? You could run MSCONFIG and uncheck the startup items to ensure that no other applications could be running and interfering with the functionality of OE.

At the start you mentioned "reloading" OE. Did this mean reinstalling it? and if so did you uninstall from add/remove progams first?

Another thing you could try is to download opera (http://www.opera.com/download/)
and see if its eMail program works, which would then at least identify the problem as being OE related.
