Hello I'm new to this internet/ computing thing and I have many questions. Firstly I have just purchased a second hand machine loaded with Windows XP professional. I'm a bit thick and will never get the benefit of XP. I've had XP removed & Win 98 installed. My question is - can I now sell the Windows XP to somebody else? I have no idea if its registered to this machine.

Forget about selling a copy of XP is my opinion. The registration process for a second and third loading of it is bad enough when you do it on the same machine....much less a different machine. Not worth it.

redduffer, I am curious as to your reasons for removing WIn XP pro.
If the operating system is legit{meaning original product ID} you then have several options, otherwise I believe the trial time period to activate WIn XP is 30 days, then it would lock up your system if you did not call Microsoft to activate it.
1) you could set up a dual-boot of Win98/Win XP pro by creating a 2nd partition on your hard drive{using partiton magic software for example}
2) you could FDISK and format and partition existing hard drive, and reinstall Win XP
It really depends on your hardware compatability,what software/games you use etc.
Win XP is different from Win98 for several reasons. It is based on the NT kernel which theoretically makes your computer less prone to crashes that you would normally require a restart{reboot}. It also does a much better job of allocating memory, and uses the swap file more efficiently. You also have option of using FAT32 or NTFS{New Technology File System}for increased security and efficiency.

Thanks Pawprint. The XP package is an original, boxed and bought from a local Staples dealership. I've had XP on this machine but found problems with freezing & misc errors that I'm unable to understand. Now I,m back on win98 with a new memory stick & cable modem everything is running fine. I just wondered about re-sale problems because XP is just stuffed in the back of a cupboard.

I understand now why you uninstalled Win XP.
If you haven't activated or registered your copy of Win XP,I believe you could explore possibilities of selling it.
