Another Greenhorn here!
I'm fed up with tons of Junk Mail - over 50 already today.
I'm running Hotmail in conjunction with Incredimail, so I need effective software that works when the e-mail account is web-based.
Spam Detective works up to a poit, but it's not cheap and its proprietors admit that it's not really for web mail.
Any ideas please

MailWasher (http://www.mailwasher.net/)
It doesn't work for web based emails yet.
I use it for my primary email address. It not only deletes spam from the server, it also replies back to the sender saying that email is not valid.
Returned mail: User unknown
If they don't receive the return email, it is no concern of mine. Just as long it is deleted from the server before I download any emails. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Hope this helps.
Umm....how about a new account, just for personal/private mail?
If you do Hotmail make sure that everything that can be opted out of is.
Most of the filtering software I have seen is not for webmail.
I can't remebmer if Hotmail will allow you to set up filters/rules but if it does you can ship a whole bunch of that stuff directly to the trash by settong up a couple of rules.

Turning on Hotmail's Junk Mail filter's 90% of Spam there. But you have to be careful, it will initially send e-Zines and others to the the Junk folder and you have to flag them for future delivery to your main. I lost a couple of web host renewal notices before I figured that out http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif.

Thanks to all.
Web mail filters defeat most existing software, aat least so far as I've been able to judge - although Hotmail can be configured to at least identify 75% of it.
with 50-100 junk e-mails daily, however, u can soon run up against Hotmail's newly imposed storage limits!
InboxDoctor has been suggested, so I'm off to take a look.
Thanks again, everyone.

The Hotmail account limit has been in effect for as long as I can remember (I was using Hotmail before MS bought it out several years ago). They have just been trying to make more money from additional storage space recently.
As annoying as spam can be, I have more problems with friends and family forwarding huge image attachments than with spam pushing my account limit. Like the 300KB photo I received this week of yet another relative's grandchild. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
In fact, well meaning friends who forward every horror story, promises of money from mythical email trackers, and every conceivable scam, con, and hoax give me a lot more heartburn than spammers. Ever explain to a friend that they sent out a hoax or urban legend to their entire address book? Rarely do they apologize or thank you, usually they won't write you again - until the next one comes their way. And those guilt tag lines, ARGH!! It is especially heart-warming to receive a message (with 10 or so ">" on each line) telling me what a truly special and dear friend I am, along with the 40 or so other people in the address header (and PLEASE pass it on to at least a dozen friends AND the one who sent it to you OR else you will break an eternal chain that will bring civilization as we know it to a grinding halt)...
Sorry, just venting on a sore spot.

Thanks Eyutechus, I sympathise and at the same timeI thank you for your interest. I was interested in your point about Hotmail being used as a "milk cow" by mr Gates and co.
Seriously, it's potentially a real nuisance. Last summer, I came back from vacation to be greeted by the sight of over 700 items of junk mail in my Hotmail in-box - and, more annoying still, my Hotmail account suspended for exceeding the then storage limit. This time around, the limit is set much lower, unless you pay, and if you fail to log on within 30 days, you are automatically disconnected, with other sanctions also applied by MSN.
I'd really like to wave goodbye to dear old Hotmail, but I'm a 24x7 cabe user and there aren't a lot of free options!
