View Full Version : Hard drive telling me lies!
When I open up my Windows Explorer, to see the remaining capacity of the partitioned hard drive, I see that my C drive contains 142 megabytes of free space. When I load a chess program that I have, and I look again to see the remaining space, it reads 82.9 megabytes. Where are 52.8 megabytes going? None of the other hard drive partitions are affected. Also, sometimes larger or smaller amounts of memory will go missing always from the C drive. When I close down the chess program and look at the C drive again it still states 82.9 megabytes. If I click around a bit on different things, such as the D drive or the E drive and then back to the C drive, the 142 megabytes have magically reappeared again. How can this be happening? Could it have something to do with my RAM memory? I have 64 meg of RAM, a 200 Mhz processor and it is all driving me bananas – can you help, please?
It could be that either the chess program itself creates a swapfile or Windows is using the swapfile while the chess program is running. To check on swapfile useage go to the System Monitor (Start Menu -> Accessoires ->Microsoft, I think...I rearanged my start menu and nkow I can't remember the defaults...). When you get it running go to the Add item (under Edit) click it and then Memory Manager, clik it scroll down in the right hand pane and click on "swapfile in use" then ok and it will then show how much of the swap file is being used. Open the chess program with the Systom monitor running in the backround and see if it changes the swapfile size.

Thanks mjc
I'll try all of that and let you know. I'm at a local library at the moment as I don't have access to the Internet at home so my replies will be few and far between; I have to get on-line where ever I can these days. I'm very grateful for all your help.

Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Monitor is the default. I would add Swapfile Size and Swapfile in use. Right now mine says I have a 48MB swap file, and 7MB of it is in use.
I agree though, it's possible the program creates its own swap file, or it increases the size of the existing one.
