Wasn't certain which section to post this query.
I've read the postings concerning the Temp and TIF files, and am running the 'Spider' program. I've noticed that if I go to Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/Delete Files, and tick the 'Delete all offline content' box, then run Spider again, the latter does not indicate there being any URLs in the TIF.
It seems that Internet Explorer does have the ability to remove these files, but it does no harm to run Spider in addition. Spider can also delete and reduce the size of the TIF folder.
Regarding security issues, has anyone looked inside their Application Data Folders (.dbx). Delete your e-mails and they'll still be listed there. Not only that, but the part-contents of word processing documents can sometimes be seen. How do THEY get there? Can explain the lowdown concerning these folders.

Hi Mike,
IE does have the ability to empty the TIF folder. No problem there. It's the index.dat folder that most people use spider for. The contents of this file contains a list of all the web sites you visit. IE does not delete these files. After a time it can add up to many MB's of space. That's the benifit of using SPIDER (http://www.fsm.nl/ward/). http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi Mike
Re:Spider. After noting the link, I downloaded the programme, faithfully unzipped it, ranit - or thought I had - and then it promptly disappeared completely, faster than a real live spider can run!!
Well, there you go and it sounded like such a great idea? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

You might want to try it again. I don't know what happened but Spider has been around for a long time. It's a simple program. Very effective. Has worked, no problem, for me and many others. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Whoops - a correction to my posting. For TIF read Index.dat.
I experimented again. Spider gave a list of URL's in Index.dat.
In Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/Delete Files, and ticking the 'Delete all offline content' box, Spider still listed files in the Index.dat.
BUT, in I.E. Tools/Internet Options/Advanced, there's a box called "Empty temporary internet files folder when browser is closed." I closed I.E. and checked with Spider again. This time Spider listed no files at all in the Index.dat.
Another program that does the same job, including deleting the SWAP file in DOS mode, is 'Clean Disk Security' (www.theabsolute.net/sware). It doesn't list the contents of Index.dat as Spider does but still deletes it.
Mitch, you say that Spider "disappeared" - where to? Some programs do not install an icon on the Desktop, so you wonder how to run it. If that's the case (and I don't know if you unzipped it to a new folder called Spider), go to C:\Program files and see if it's there. There should be a blue icon like a satellite receiver. Yes? Right-click
and choose 'Create shortcut' from the menu. Right-click on the 'shortcut to spider' and select 'Cut'. Return to your Desktop and click 'Paste'. There you go, leave it there or drag it to the toolbar/taskbar (can never remember the difference!) at the bottom of the screen.

Thanks a lot Mike, I appreciate.
I am, however, still having serious problems with Spider and I'm worried for the stability of my system. All in all, it's hardly the most user-friendly of programmes, so I'm giving "Track Eraser" a trial and so far it's looking real good!
Thanks again for your time.
Cheers! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Can't say I've heard of 'Track Eraser'. Can you let me have the URL and I'll read the gen on it.

Hi everyone,
I know it comes without many directions but it's not all that bad. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Remember, you have to download and install SpiderBite too. It all comes together. Watch for where you're downloading the program and all should be well. After the "Spider has bitten" you still need to delete the contents of the file created. When asked if you want to accept changes to the file click "yes" and poof...it's gone.
Ward seems to be a very brite guy. Although he does seem to have alot of problems with e-mail. Go figure. This guy spotted this part of IE, exposed it, and created a program to defeat it, all at the age of 17 years! I think this entitles him to honorary MASTER GEEK status.

Hi Mike,
I was just going to find the URL for Tracks Eraser, when I noticed it had already been posted for you by Yoda74 - a true Grand Master!
When you've taken a look, I'll be very interested in what you think. It installed like a dream, it's user-friendly and it seems to be running both smoothly and efficiently on my system.
Worth a free 15 day trial............worth$29.95, well????? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
