View Full Version : From ***.doc extension to format for SunRay system with StarOffice
I am using MS word on a windows environment. The word files on Word are saved as ***.doc file.
I have to also use SunRay system with Unix at another location. The system at the distant location has StarOffice. What file extension could I use so I can open/work/print with Sun-Ray systems?
I thought that StarOffice had an import function for MS Word documents. Depending on what flavor of 'nix you are using you should be able to read a disk formatted in Windows (or you can burn them to a CD or maybe CD-RW )
what version of Word are you running?
I just popped open SO and looked under the file types listed in "Open"...the frist thing listed "MS Word 97/2000"

As mjc pointed out, Star office is able to natively read *.doc MS files. However, if you are not %100 sure, then use the *.rtf extension { rich text format } this way you wont lose your fonts/colors. Even basic Wordpad in windows can read this format.

I have tried with the print command on the unix console for example:
lp -d printername filename.doc
the filename.doc that was printed was garbled.
I did not actually open it up with StarOffice.
As a result I assumed it did not recognise the format.
I guess if I open it up in StarOffice and make modication/print there from its menu or click on the icons on the tolbar will be OK?
