View Full Version : favorite icons
All the icons in my favorites are the same (blue 'e' page)...is this the way it is. Or can this be changed? Could of sworn I had seen some other types in there before. Using windows ME. thanks
Yes other icons can be used (webites can set their own), but for some reason IE likes to reset them to the default IE icon.

Favorites, InternetShorcuts or whatever. RightClick/Properties/ChangeIcon Browse for Icon of your choice. Can do all that - but just where is the icon actually stored? and how does a website go about setting it up??

The Icon shown in the favourites menu only works, AFAIK, in IE5 or greater. It's done by creating an icon file (32*32 pixel 8bit colour) in an icon editor, and saving it in the root directory of the website. IE downloads the file when you add the site to your favourites list. How they can be recovered, I'm not certain, but I would imagine that you would have to visit the site again and choose add to favorites, overwriting the existing shortcut.

Reason that IE resets the icons is because the icon is stored in the Temporary Internet Files directory. (Depending of the size of your cache)
The only way to save that icon is to go into the Temporary Internet Files directory and copy that icon to another directory. Like an icon directory.
Then right click the bookmarked link and go to properties and change the icon manually to where ever you save that icon.
Or you can change the icon to any other icon you see fit using.

John0904 I had imagined that the icon would be stored in a system folder somewhere but you are right they sit in the TIF folder and so must be renewed once the TIF is cleared.
David You too are correct about IE5+ but the way it is (most commonly) downloaded from the rootdirectory is by IE5+ actively looking for an icon file with the default name favicon.ico MSDN Library ShortcutIcon (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS99-018.asp)
I have also learned that these ShortcutIcons (unless you have uptodate security patches) are a security vulnerability in Win9x Malformed Favorites Icon (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS99-018.asp)
