Hello, i recently bought a pIII 800 pc from packard bell, it runs windows Me, it seems incredibly slow when starting up and opening programs, i could almost have a cup of tea while waiting for word to start up. Games it runs at a good speed. But also everyday i will get a program that tells me it has to shut down as there was a problem with the kernel32 ?? every program has done this they seem to take it in turns to shut down with a hernel32 problem. Sometimes i have got a winshock error instead of a kernel error.
any ideas?

Kernel32 is a .dll file and probably needs to be updated. This kind of thing happens all the time. You might want to check out the microsoft site for a service pack for WinME... or run a search for kernel32 on google.com. Just beware to look for warnings from MS about incompatibility with UK systems.

Could it not just be a case of reinstalling Windows, and it should replace the Kernel?

Here's a few links to help you get started, however if these aren't exactly what you are looking for, post back with the exact error you are receiving.

What is Kernel32.dll (http://www.windowstrouble.com/kernel.shtml)
Invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll (http://www.windowstrouble.com/kernel32dll.shtml)
Microsoft Support (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q187/9/65.asp)

Of course reinstalling WinME probably couldn't hurt... but you really may need to update the .dll file. MS is famous for releasing products then following with service packs to fix the problems they didn't fix before the release. Try this link: http://support.microsoft.com/directory/default.asp
It has MS support and download links specifically for the UK.
I really feel for you because I once had a problem with my machine that not only caused kernel32.dll faults and froze - but did so EVERY time you started/rebooted the PC and tried to open ANY program. Drove me nuts and I tried everything until I eventually deleted the WIN directory and reinstalled Windows as reinstalling alone did not work.

Good luck! I'd be interested to know what happens...
