okay. heres my second problem.
win2k won't turn off the computer automatically when i go to shutdown. it does all the procedures of a normal shutdown, such as saving the desktop, then shutting off the harddrives, etc. then the screen blanks out and the harddrives, cddrives stop spinning, but the power LED is still on and you could still hear the fans inside spinning.
also, when i try to put the system to standby, it'll just hang.
any help would do. thank you

Go to Control panel and open the "power options" icon. Now click the "APM" tab and make sure that "Enable Advance....." is choosen. Also make sure that your BIOS has all power management functions turned on.

For the standby function open the "hibernate" tab and choose "Enable hibernate....".
