I upgraded a Micron MPC Pentium 133 (80 meg RAM) to Windows 98. All went smoothly but the processor now runs at a benchmark of 6 (on a 100 scale for a Pentium 100)Everything works great but SLOW http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif
Any ideas of what I can do to get it running again at 133 mghz? Thanks

Unless you did something in the jumper settings to change the cpu settings...IT IS RUNNING @ 133 MHZ...However, very slow RELATIVE to other 133's (which are probably running Win 95 ...which is what that chip was designed to run). I never recommend migrating to Win98 unless you have at least a 200 mhz processor and at least as much Ram as you have. Win 98 is a good deal SLOWER than Win 95 ver.B.....but it has some really neat stuff in it ....dont you just love Trade-Off's http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
A Benchmark test tells you what your chip is doing RELATIVE to a perfectly set up chip of the same mhz rating (ie-fast Ram, Motherboard, and hard drive)
One thing you CAN do is Defrag your Hard Drive......it takes a while in 98 but if it's more than 3% fragmented ....you will notice a big difference in performance.....windows doesnt like to be fragmented!

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Thanks for the reply to my problem. Let me tell you what I found that solved my slow, and when I meant slow, I mean, hourglass icon to open a folder and 5 minutes to boot etc. I went into setup for BIOS and hit set to defaults and rebooted. ZOWIE!! It took off and booted in 2 minutes and opened programs just like before. I benchmarked it and it was at 131 compared to 6 before. I returned to BIOS and checked to see what had changed and I could not find anything. I don't know why, but it got me back on track. FYI for the future, if anyone experiences the same.
Thanks http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

One thing you might want to do in the very near future....esp if you are losing time or this happens again is to change the cmos battery on the motherboard. You might have lost your bios settings as a result of a worn out battery......(It's the quarter sized silver thing on the mobo near the PCI slots & Keyboard area. Batteries are only about $3.50.
