I'm in the process of building a new machine. I've got all the components and have the MB and CPU mounted, (MB and CPU came as a package), graphics card and memory installed, the HD and FD hooked up. I figured before I went too much farther I'd power it up to see if the MB would POST. Well to my surprise I got nothing. No power to the fans, no POST no nothing. Not even the power supply fan started! I get one quick flash of the power LED so I know I'm getting something to the MB but that's it. This is my first ATX build, (am an AT junkie), so I'm confused as to where to look. My 1st thought is a bad power supply but I want to make sure before I call to get a replacement. Here is my config:
ABIT KT7A-RAID
900 mhz T'brd
AMK 292-3333-300 case 300 watt PS
ASUS V7700 deluxe 32 mb graphics card
256mb Crucial PC133 cas2 memory
IBM 45GB deskstar HD
no cd in yet.
Anyone have any ideas of what I should try next?
Thanks in advance for all replies.

The MOBO sounds like its shorting out.
Try the following
1. Remove all but Memory, Video card and processor. Power on see if you get a Post.
If it does not post doing the above.
Unplug the power cord from the case.
Than remove the motherboard place it on a piece of cardboard. Make sure you are grounded while doing this. place the Video card in and the memory processor as well. plug the powercord into the case and attach the ATX power to the motherboard and see if it will post out side the case.
If it does post it is shorting out. Unplug the power from the case and recheck all connectons, when you place the MOBO in make sure the screws have the washers on them. Reseat the MOBO in the case. Do not attach anything try to get the MOBO to post.
With just the Video card Memory and Processor.
Let us know if this works. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Well...I cant stress the importance of having the cpu cooling fan connected securely to a Tbird before ANY post up (I assume you had it hooked up http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)...I would disconnect everything EXCEPT: mobo, cpu, cpu fan, memory (re-seat it first) & video(ie-no HD,CD,Floppy).....recheck the "power on" cable from on/off switch to mobo and possibly flip it around to opposite posts from the last try. Then try posting up to bios only. Let us know what happens......

Seems to me too that the PS has something wrong!!! did you set the 110V on the PS? sometimes they come ready to be used in Europe (220V), check the tiny red switch close to the powersupply fan and set it at 110V. Did you double check that CPU and memory are correctly installed? do you have the small case speaker connected? it might give you a clou of what is going on. But if the PS fan is not working i would say that either the PS is faulty or the above mentioned red switch is not properly set. I think i read once that is the red switch is not properly set the PS by default plays "dead" to avoid damaging the mobo! another thing: connect the front panel switch to the mobo and power up the pc with it! do not rely on the back PS black switch only, is not enought to power up the computer.
hope it helps, i understand the frustration!
good luck

Hello,
Silly question, but did you make sure that the AT/ATX jumper on the Motherboard is in the ATX position? Othet than that the other suggestions are excellent.

Thanks for all the great ideas. Unfortunatly I've tried them all to no avail. I have a friend that is letting me use a PS so I can eliminate that as being the culprit. Hopefully it will be simply a bad PS. That way I can move on to the next problem!!
I'll post a message tommorrow night after I test the 2nd PS.
Thanks again to all!!!
