My laptop computer totally 'freezes' when I am on-line. It happens after I have been on-line anywhere from 5 minutes to a half hour. It doesn't matter if I am checking email or just surfing. The whole computer will just lock up and I can't do anything. Contol Alt delete does nothing and the only thing I can do is hit the off button and restart. I do not have this problem doing anything else, only on-line. I am running with Win98.
The problem seemed to get worse after the last time I repaired errors and defraged the hard drive.
Any suggestions?

Me thinks it's the MOUSE http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif........try this: My computer/Control panel/System/Performance/Graphics and move the accellerator back one notch...see if that helps.

Uh... what browser are you running? Do you have the power supply plugged in? Does the PC freeze at any other times or just when you are on the net?

Changing the mouse settings didn't help. It doesn't matter which browser I run with, I have both Netscape 4.7 and IE 5.00. It only happens when I am on-line. I have never had it happen when I am running the computer normally and it happens when I am using it on battery and when it is plugged in. There is no difference.

Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstall the adapter's (modem or lan) drivers?
If your using a modem try reinstalling it to com4.
Try deselecting your modem's FIFO settings.

That sounds freaky - but there has GOT to be a reason why it is doing this... somewhere. If it only happens while you are on the net, then I suspect that it is related somehow. Do you connect by modem? Try to remember EXACTLY what you were doing (or not doing) just before it happens... or try to recreate the problem and see if there is some trigger. Like it onyl happens when you leave the computer on and walk away for a while or something.

Bingo there Technochic........has to be something that has been changed or a hardware item(s) have SOME problem......in spite of what we sometimes think about Win.....there isnt any magic goin on here.....Try this: Go to Accessories/System Tools/System Information/Tools/System File Checker....check to see if any Win files are corrupt.....could cause a host of problems if any are.(Only if you have Win98 on the laptop will this work http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif )

Do you use a PC-card modem? If you do try this modem in another laptop if you can or try a different modem in the troubled laptop.

Some good suggestions have already been made, and your problem can be caused by any of a number of things. Memory issues are very likely, and sometimes video drivers or settings can cause this too.
Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card, and drop the resolution back a notch or two and see if it has any affect. If you're currently running 32 bit True Color set it on 16 Bit and see.
Shut down all applications running in the background, see if it's related to something else taking resources. Leave only your virus scanner and firewall, if you run one. Try it without the virus scanner too, just to prove or disprove problems with it. But be very careful...don't download anything or open any email attachments...
Go into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and run the IE repair tool.
Could also be IE and Netscape fighting each other. Go through the settings for both and be sure only one is set to be default browser. Just to be sure, look in IE Tools\Internet Options and turn off Autocomplete. It sometimes causes other problems, I haven't seen it related to this, but I suppose it's a chance.
If you can, try different known good memory.
