My applogies if this has been posted somewhere else in the forum. My friend has a pc that refuses to bot up. It gets as far as checking the a:, then shuts off. The fan at the back has stopped turning, and I think it could have something to do with her power supply being fried, or her processor. I'm sorry I don't have her specs right now, but I will post back and let you know if you need them.

It sounds like overheating

Sounds more like an overclocking mis-match, or possibly a CMOS battery. Overheating shutdowns usually take a little while longer to develop. Try checking the manual to verify the jumper settings. More info would help: CPU model and speed, any overclocking, CPU fan running, etc. Can you get to the BIOS setup screen? How many devices plugged into power supply? Data (ribbon) cables correctly oriented? IDE drive master/slave jumpers correct? Video card and memory sticks firmly seated and locked down?

Thanks for the responses guys. As an update to the story, it turned out to be the power supply after all. A new one has been installed and it is working fine.
