View Full Version : Opera - IE
This seems to be a very strange problem.
I updated my personal web page and uploaded it. Opera couldn't see the changes when I reloaded the screen but IE could. Do you have any ideas?
By the way, this may seem to be an inappropriate place for this post but I wasn't sure where to put it and this computer is part of a network, so...
I played around with this problem until 1:30 AM and finally found it. It was a problem with my HTML. It was only one slash. I don't know why but Opera needed that slash in the code removed and it didn't matter to IE if that slash was there or not.
jes,
Just getting back into actually doing something here instead of playing....hehe.
I would guess that your problem stems from the fact that IE is not as standards compliant as Opera is. In some ways that gives IE an advantage, it is more fault tolerant of html coding errors. That is why it is a good idea to check you pages in a couple of differnt browsers or to use some sort of validation service.
I just tried to enter my ebay accout (My Ebay) with Opera. It says that the browser will not allow cookies. I go into the preferences and set both the drop-down boxes to display the cookies and it still won't work, but it will in IE.
Gee, am I going to have to install Opera again so I can get some practice troubleshooting it?
You may have to remove the current cookies, and start over, also it may require a restart (no reboot) to have the change take effect.

Hi jes,
I just tried playing around with this, and here is what I found:
If you set Preferences->Network->Browser Identification to identify as Opera, then everything works fine. If you set it to identify as IE, then you get a message telling you that you need to set your browser to accept cookies.
In general, if you are having trouble doing something with Opera, one of the first things to try is to change how the browser identifies itself (both because it is easy to do and it often makes a difference).
John
If My Ebay works with IE5 why won't it work when you uses Opera that is IDing as IE5?

Don't know if I will be able to post or not, having trouble with Opera retainiung cookies. Like you have them set to show all. Managed to get and stay logged in earlier, and am now having to re-insert my user name and password again to try and post to here. I have not logged out or closed down Opera. Everything is OK with IE but do not want to use that as not as much control with it. Anybody any ideas?

Ernie; when you say not retaining cookies, what do you mean exactly? Are the cookies actually disappearing from the Opera store and are you sure you haven't enabled "Throw away new Cookies on Exit".
BTW there is a little utility (87KB) called Opera Explorer (O4FE) which can be got from HERE (http://www.westelcom.com/users/jsegur/) which allows you to easily view Opera's Cookies, History, Links etc.
..it is more fault tolerant of html coding errors.. He he; yes that's one way of looking at it; and it's not only HTML but also incorrect Javascript that it seems "tolerant" of. Unfortunately this is not IMHO a good thing since programmers/web-designers just get sloppier, perhaps thinking if it works in IE then that's going to work for 90% or more of the world.
A lot of the programming threads in Opera newsgroups start out by criticising Opera before it's pointed out that it is the code that is actually wrong. So I presume the attempts to mimic the interpretation and rendering of pages by using "Identify as......" are an attempt to be able to rectify most of these errors - but it can't catch them all.
The end result is that anyone designing a webpage must actually check them out in IE, Opera and Mozilla ... if they want to be sure of others viewing them correctly - and even go to the lengths of trying them out in different versions as well maybe. And this is the result of IE (in particular) not being made truly standard compliant. Now surely there couldn't be anything deliberate in that by M$$$ could there?? :D
Paul, I was trying to be nice, but some of the threads I've seen in the Mozilla newsgroups over the coding issue would curl your hair...;) .
The only reason I still use IE is that there are a couple of important sites that won't work cooreectly with Mozilla (or Opera, I suppose...but I haven't tried it yet). I have examined the code on these pages, and guess what? It works with IE because it was written for it....
