recently upgraded my memory from 2 sticks of 64 mbs p.c.600 rdram, to 2 sticks of 128 mbs p.c.800 rdram,...I have 2 sticks of the removed factory installed 64 mbs of p.c.600 rdram left over. knowing that, would i gain more from the 256 p.c.800 rdram stand alone. or would i gain more bang installing back the 2 -64mbs of p.c.600, and knowing that it all will revert to the lesser p.c.600 to 384mbs. which senario will i gain more from??
NOT A GAMER, regular user, surfing the web , e-mail, small stuff.
just want to know i have the best combo if needed.

thanks, billy.:)

My question to you is, are you sure that your machine is actually running that PC800 at full speed?

If you are not into gaming, compliling huge databases, or working with huge graphics files, then you probably wouldn't notice a difference. So yes, you could possibly gain more even though the memory would be slightly slower.

thanks, so to sum up, you suggest the more but slightly slower ram correct? could you please tell me what the major advantage would be? if any, other then being able to use my 2 64mb's p.c.600's for a total of 384 p.c.600. thanks very much, billy.

unless you are a gammer you will not notice the diff, so you might as well use all your sticks of memory. if not using xp over 256 is overkill.

Mark that is not entirely true, Win9x performance graph flattens out considerably but the performance leve still increases over 256MB. And he already has the 128MB so yes, use it! Because the benefit of having that much isn't as great as going to be as great going from 64 to 128MB, doesn't mean there isn't one.

mjc, thanks for filling me on the mem issue with win 98. i have always thought tha 128mgs was the most that 98 could handle correctly. that,s why i love these posts. always learning
thanks Mark

Win98 came out when RAM was still fairly high priced (well over $1 a MB) and the performance gains of going over 128MB were not as cost effective as going from 32 or 64MB to 128MB, so 128MB sort of became the recomended maximum...now that RAM is pretty cheap, especially if someone has the slots available and the old sticks already, just add on to it. Not all systems have a problem with more than 512MB and win9x, just that it is a known problem and the start point is 512MB.

Read This (http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q253912) microsoft white paper on how to overcome the 512Mb lid on win98. Of course it still will not use it efficiently but at least you can run.
