I want to scavenge parts from my works old computer, but the boss is worried about information being left on the machine. I know enough to advise him to scrap the hard drive but would like to reassure him that nothing else in the comp will contain any business informaition? Can anyone confirm this for me?????

Sometimes mice remember stuff. So you might want to get rid of it as well!

Seriously, only the hard disk contains data from the company. You can still salvage the hard disk and get rid of any data by reformatting it, or to be on the supersafe side, by writing zeros to the whole hard disk. Simply reformatting it will leave recoverable data sometimes, but writing zero erases all the data with no chance of anyone getting the info.

There are several trial versions of data wiping programs that will perform to government specs for data destruction....by using a zero/random fill several times.

Nortons InfoWipe (part of Nortons Utilities) can do a government wipe. No data will be recoverable. :)

Your going to want to wipe the drive at least Thrice, it takes quite a while but worth it.But be careful do not want to do this every week or you WILL kill the drive. been there done that  White crayon was a good one for the Government and law enforcement wipes. Do back up all data before hand.
